Again, many thanks for all the comments and help. Putting the word out has already led to a definite sighting of the car on the day it was taken (Monday May 19th). It was seen travelling south on Canonbury Road, Islington, London N1 by Canonbury Square Gardens at around 3:45 - 3:55 pm. The driver was male, sun-tanned or olive skinned, probably 20s and was "smartly dressed" with sunglasses and a white tee shirt.

The specific nature of this information should give the police options regarding CC footage... although when I contacted them to pass this on this morning, they had already closed the case! It has now been re-opened.

If the attached notice could be shared on Facebook, etc, I'd be really grateful.

Shared, tweeted & keep up info on direction of travel. Hit the council & authority CCTV units with freedom of information acts if the police don't pull their fingers out. Councils usually hold footage for fourteen days.

Yes. Good idea.

I have several police "fails". The most notorious one being the next door neighbour.

Roger moved out into the country because as he had retired, he was rich enough and had enough time to enjoy the village life, birds tweeting in the trees, buttercups waving in the breeze. Sadly, he lived next door to us and occasionally, someone does some work and I had a noisy mini. He had some sort of personality disorder and it manifested itself with him being high profile about his dislike of cars and people driving them. He shouted abuse at my chums churchgoing wife, my father (then in 70s) had his car tyres cut, I had a blow out and found cuts in my tyres. Someone who parked "by Rogers house" got his brake pipes interfered with. It ended up with him burning the big chalet (shed) down in the garden. Among several thousands worth of stuff, I lost a mint set of 5 6" JA Pearce wheels...they were like new. I was doing Teacher Training in Bristol at the time and came home to this, when I was stood at the bottom of the garden, Roger came out to note how "Noisy you, hammering away in your shed until 11pm - dad goes to bed about 8:30 deserved it".

I said "Well Roger, I know exactly who is responsible for all of this" and he said "Well, you deserved it". The non-verbal stuff which accompanied it made it a clear confession. I got straight on the phone to the Police. It appeared that Mr Goodman had changed his mind but the policeman said "If ANYTHING happens to Mr Goodman, or Mr Goodman's property, we will be straight around to see you". In quite a threatening manner.

At the time, my whole teaching career could be thrown into the weeds by saying BOO to a goose. This is no longer the case. This compounded the experience I had when I was 19 where my Morris Minor 1968 had it's door pulled open (and was still locked) and the handbrake let off and it wrapped around a lamp post. The officer's words were "Son, I'm not interested".


The very next time something like this happens, I will be not involving the police and dealing with it with a big piece of wood.

My advice would be to track the person down (who will probably be more easy to find than you think) and give them a beating.

NB:- I am a very nice chap, but when the system is broken, you have to meter out your own justice.

Sadly Ant, to the coppers, it's 'just another stolen car'. They have not care of interest that it is not just another car.

In the shed, the reply that I would like to write here after reading you sad (on just so many levels) story I can't print here, suffice to say it sounds a little like 'that's fire truck'. You guys were there before 'Roger' so if he didn't look about and make his own enquires before moving there, then who's fault is that?

Unfortunately, the law in so many parts is the world turned upside down and this is yet another very clear example of that.

Thanks again for comments and for sharing news of the theft - it's led to another reported sighting of the car with a better description of the driver. The precise location and time will also give more CCTV options.

"I saw the mini you had stolen driven recklessly on the 19th at 15:35. The guy was driving fast down Islington Park Street towards Upper Street. Described as white, well tanned, mid forties, grey/brown hair. White t-shirt. Hope you get it back"
