Swing arm bearing and bush removal

Post by sidheli »

Hi i'm replacing needle bearing and bush on a swing arm and haven't done it for 30 yrs,.. anyone have a method beside trying to bash it out with a punch that one seems to keep slipping off the narrow groove?
thanks for any help,....i really dont look fwd to spend a WHOLE night doing this!

I drive the bearing out with a hammer and long drift, then thread a 7/8" UNC tap into the bush and press on the end of the tap to with the same long drift. It is often tight so pressing is likely to be more successful than hammering it out.

It is a job that really is best done with the correct puller.

I have done them by grinding 2 slots almost through them, at about 90 degrees apart, then using a fine screw drive blade to get under the shell of them to split them out. Take care though or you could damaged the casting.
