Will late steering column fit mk1 ?

Post by monkeyjim »

Hi ,
Issue with steering column , splines are worn .
Can a later column inner be used in the mk1 outer .
I am not using the horn in centre of steering column .

I have a 69 mk2 one complete with wheel column switch and shroud but rather not split it all up . Rather use a mk3 onwards .

If someone has got a mk1 column or what ever else fits , I am gutted I cannot make Blyton but a forum member friend of mine can and if I twisted his arm It could be collected from there .

dave,

i did see a post ( long ago ) about using a later mk4 steering column ( one a m1) and welding on the tabs for screwing the mk1 steering column cover on.

plus you use the later bushes which are better that the early oily fibre thing. ( and easier to change)

i am sure rich know more about it, i sure it was him who talked about it before

In short, no.

Repair Splines are available, for example http://minisport.com.au/mini-steering-c ... ll-columns

the late inner will not fit the mk1 outer as the shaft is different at the bottom end (so wont work with the longer mk1 outer tube, I fitted both late parts to my racer and just welded the tags on to suit the mk1 shroud, so the indicator fits and works and it all looks as it should do.

its a great mod as the lower plastic bush on the later cars is far superior to the felt bush, particularly if your driving the car hard - there is no movement at all in my wheel now

the only thing that doesn't work is the horn as the shaft isn't drilled for it.

bit of topic, but i once gave myself a very very sore index finger removing the column from a mk1

Someone had over tightned the pinch bolt, i had a lever under it maxium pressure my body weight on the lever.............

Lever slipped and i jammed my finger between the lever and the door step lip that the sealing rubber fits too, unfortunatley the rubber was not fitted, immediate blood blister behind my nail, was only 17 at the time did not know the procedure for releasing the pressure lol

Couldnt sleep all night finger was that bloody sore, went to work on saturday morning could hardly move my hand, showed my old boss he said drill a hole in your nail.............

I said f@*k off lol, his reply was if you dont you can go to the doctor and he will slide a needle under your nail and reduce the pressure that way....... hmmm sounds even worse.

So my hand was duly placed on the a reasonably clean cloth on the dirty old work bench, i found the smallest drillbit i could find, wasnt putting it in a drill though lol, just used my thumb and finger of my other hand to gently drill my nail...........

At last a slight popping sensation and immediate relief.

Needles to say any other column removals were done very carefully after that
The best repairs go un-noticed

Does that repair spline section get welded onto the old shaft?

If you fit a Mk4 column to an early car, can the column be drilled to take the Mk1 horn parts?

I don't need to do this but this is the sort of information I may need in the future.
