Early clutch oil seal

Post by miniminor »

Rebuilt my standard 850 engine (with coil spring flywheel)
Despite fitting a new clutch primary gear oil seal it failed on starting up and leaked
I have now stripped the flywheel off and ready to fit another new one.
I have ordered 13H2934 from Bullmotif which I understand fits all models 59 - 92 however I see they also suggest GHS101 for early coil spring cars, so Ive ordered both.
Has anybody any experience of which I should use for this car?

(Apart from the seal failing Im happy with how it all looks)

Before jumping to the conclusion that the problem is the Oil Seal (and it could be) and assuming that it was all fitted up correctly, does this have the pressure fed primary gear? If so, especially given that it started leaking oil right away, that's probably where I'd look first.

It was the oil seal, stripped it down, lip of seal ripped at bottom.

Very nice looking car / resto by the way, yes, you should be very happy with that.

Usually when the seals tear, it's from having no lube on the lip, they do need a smear of something.

I'd just put a drop of engine oil on the seal, maybe not enough? Think I'll grease it this time.

Hmmm,,, yeah, that's all I put on them (~1 drop of oil), it's a bit odd.

Check "insertion" method....
... as well as using the correct lube!

Did you use the correct tool?

Had exactly this happen with my mk1. I had obviously damaged the lip of the seal when fitting it over the step on the crank tail. Replaced with the standard one, with gaffer tape and a lot of oil round the crank and it all seems good now

Gotta say, that's what I was thinking after it was confirmed that the seal was damaged, but I didn't want to post that :D

Well all back together with new seal and greased extensively while fitting it. 0nly able to get it for a short run last night, about 3 miles but no leaks this time :D :D :D
