Number change .
Hi . I need to update the engine number details on my v5c because of a change of engine . Is it as simple as filling in the relevant boxes on the v5c and sending off , or will I open up a can of worms,,,,, ie , will the dvla all of a sudden turn into the Gestapo and want receipts etc . Seems mad but all my years in the trade and this is the first time I've needed to do this . Has anyone done it recently and had problems .

Re: Number change .
Hi.
I did it last year. The engine was stated as bigger than the one I was fitting as it had been changed at some point. I did a cover letter etc with a change of details on the relevant form, but it wasn't good enough. I had to get the company that rebuilt the engine to confirm the size of the engine and that they had fitted it. Or something like that.
Anyway, receipts and things seem to be required now.
Hope this helps
James

Go to your local friendly MOT station, get a company headed piece of paper stating what the engine is and send that in.

Re: Number change .
Here's the letter that I received when I tried to do the same, it should give an idea of what DVLA require:
Having sent DVLA the information requested the process was quite painless and a new V5 arrived through the post in only a few days.
Hope that helps.
Peter

Re: Number change .
Your MOT requirements are much more stringent than our inspections and this V5C document seems even more demanding.
What if you bought a used engine and transplanted it? Does the letter posted by Peter mean you must take the completed car to someone (garage) and they have to verify that you did what you said you did and (for a fee) provide a letter confirming your work? I guess if your taxation is based on displacement this makes sense as they will want to get every penny the state is due.

I was wondering the same.dklawson wrote: What if you bought a used engine and transplanted it?
I did see the letter also says;
written confirmation from the engine manufacturer showing the engine number and size
so would the info say from the Data Section of a Factory Workshop Manual suffice, or are they meaning a one off letter for your engine?

Re: Number change .
The form says you must provide one piece of evidence from the list below . So il go for the top option and provide a receipt from a mot centre, or garage .

Re: Number change .
Hi Ken
I had major issues with the DVLA 2 years ago with my mini clubman and my non rusty original 71 very nearly ended up on a Q plate.
The main issue was at some point the car had been re-sprayed green (partially) from its original colour red. The colour change was not declared on the log book and with the MOT computer system this showed up the V5 was withheld by DVLA. I wont waffle on as its a long story but it was a nightmare, I had to get the car to them to inspect and I prepared a massive file of evidence to prove the cars identity. I had to get BMH involved just to prove to them that the shell should not have a VIN stamped into the body. You would think the inspector would have known this but no.
I changed the engine like you, provided photos, rubbings of engine number and bill of sale (invoiced to me) for engine from an engineering company (that must include the engine number) and all was ok. The engine number could be anything it seems, not necessarily an original type, you could call it swifty if you wanted so long as they have some nice headed paperwork to prove its not stolen.

Re: Number change .
That sounds like the sort of problem that I don't want to get involved with . Maybe I should call the dvla first . Cheers ollie .

Re: Number change .
Maybe you should just transfer the plate with the number off the old/original engine and forget the V5 DVLA update.......

Re: Number change .
I recently sent off my V5 to get updated, it was a change of colour, engine size and engine number, I filled in the form with the new details, copied it just in case and sent it off. Approx 2 weeks later it came back with the changes made and no mistakes.

Hi 33JOY,
I recognise that registration number
It's a long time since we spoke.
I hope your restoration is progressing nicely & look forward to meeting you & seeing your finished car at some point in the future.

mark F

Re: Number change .
A few years ago when I had this problem, I supplied a letter head from a garage giving the required info & I received the updated V5 in a matter of days.
Quite efficient in actual fact.

It's been a (too) long time coming together but it's really nearly 'there' now. Frighteningly I have just checked the V5 and found that I acquired it on 9 March 2004 (ten years ago yesterday...)
For those that don't recognise the registration number (or one very like it) this car represents the start of Daniel Richmond/Downton's brief flirtation with Lotus. He competed in the car during the latter part of 1959 before it was sold to C.A.N. May who continued to campaign it at British hill climbs on a very regular basis throughout 1960 and 1961. It was rolled at Prescott by its third owner in June 1962 after which its competition career appears to have come to an end. It is powered by a 948cc A Series engine.
I intend to return it to hill climb competition this year starting at Loton Park in the middle of May.
