With reference to Pete's entry re Kennings, York Road, Doncaster.
I left London in 1972 and joined Kennings Doncaster as a trainee salesman in the September. The General manager was Graham Bland, the Sales manager was Harold Walker and my two sales colleagues were Steve Halkon and Nick Boyle. All retired (or dead now).
I was on £20 per week for eight weeks and then commission only.
The first car that I sold was a new Morris 1300 to a guy in Barnsley, he spoke broad Yorkshire and I was a Cockney. Heaven only knows how we did the deal! He paid £750 in cash.
The dealership had a petrol forecourt at the front and you were served by two good old guys wearing peaked hats and white overalls.
We were the Morris, Austin, Wolesely and MG dealers and Jacksons in Frenchgate, about half a mile away were the same.
My first company car was a Mini 850 finished in Limeflower and I had to wait until I had completed 20 sales to get it, it took about two months.
Boy did we have some fun in those days! I bought my first house further up the York Road near the greyhound stadium later that year for £3100! and worried about the repayments of £29 per month. Crikey at that price you'd put it on a credit card today.

Anyone got photo of Jacksons of Godalming, Surrey? They were Downton agents I think, and it's where 'Pandora' was built (or at east started)

Great thread.
Does anyone remember a Moss Motors in Liverpool? My Mini was dispatched to there in June 1963. I can't find any reference to it but there was a Voss Motors which is more well known. I thought there could have been a mistake on the heritage cert. but I parked next to a mk2 S last year that was also from Moss Motors. Any info would be great.

I can't find any trace of them. If they are on your Heritage Certificate then BMIHT should be able to give you an address.Does anyone remember a Moss Motors in Liverpool?

Wheatley Motors were Morris distributors so would have supplied a lot of dealers in their area. The site on Yarm Lane is now Kwik Fit.Any one know anything about Wheatley motors LTD in Stockton on Tees, Big Morris dealers i think...
Cheltenham Car Mart were Austin distributors on Tewkesbury Road.Anyone have any details or pictures of Cheltenham Car Mart?
There was a hierarchy of BMC suppliers, top of the tree were the Distributors, followed by Main Dealers then Dealers then Retail Dealers (the most numerous) and finally Stocking Traders.
The production records at BMIHT only list the destination from the factory so in the two examples above, whilst it is possible that Wheatley Motors and Cheltenham Car Mart sold each car to its first owner but equally likely that they supplied a smaller Morris or Austin outlet.
Morris in particular had large regional dealerships, for example every Mk 1 Morris Cooper S that went to London went to a Stewart and Ardern site whereas there were numerous Austin distributors. Very few Morris's went to anything lower than a distributor whereas Austin supplied a number of Main Dealers direct.

Does anyone in N Ireland (or elsewhere!!) have any old photos of Wesley Turkington's dealership in Lurgan taken during the 60s. My dad worked there from 1965 until about '72 and I'd love to get a couple of nice photos for him.

I just got my heritage cert for my 67 Austin Countryman Woody. It started life in England before coming to NZ.
Original dealer was Henlys Ltd in Bristol.
Has anyone heard of them ? info?

Hi Steve, great old shots. Henlys were a large motoring company in England back in the day and I think Stewart and Ardern were part of the group, a large supplier of Morris cars in Southern England. Cheers Tim

The Henlys key fob is the same design as the S and A one, and it claims " England's Leading Motor Agents" . A great looking key fob, and somewhat easier to find than it's S and A partner. Cheers Tim
