Wheels/tyres combination

Post by davidmuir »

Folks, Anyone got any photos of a 145 tyre on a 4 1/2 inch rim..........looking into whether I should get 145s or 165s!
Thanks

Get 145s. I've tried both, and the are so much more fun. The 165 might give more grip, up until the break away. 145s are more predictable.

+1 for 145's on the 'std' 4.5 inch rims.

The other advantage I've found for 145's over 165's on a lightweight mini is that you don't get so much of a problem with aquaplaning in wet conditions on fast roads.

I ran 145 on 4,5 GB Alloys some years ago. Felt good but watch for the rim sticking out from the tyre. Not much protection in terms of kerbing. Does depend on rim design of course.

"Do you let your woman drive your Mini???"

I like 145's on 5" also, for everyday driving. I have a car that I slalom.....wouldn't use 145's on 5" (or4.5") for that though :-)

I would love to wade in on this conversation as this was a question I've been pondering, but for specific tyres.
I've run 4.5j minilites, reverse rims and regular 4.5j rims all with 165 falkens. Never liked the tyre but was told the 145 was too narrow.
As so many of you use 145 I guess its fine.
The question i actually have is... Does anyone have a close up picture of their car on yoko a008 or A032R 165 tyres on steel rims, as I'm intrigued as to how much they "bulge" in the sidewall compared to the falken.

145/x10 was the original factory fitment on Cooper S 4.5inch wheels though. Personally I always thought the 165 looked a bit "big" on a standard car without arches and I prefer the 145. Unfortunately there isn't much choice in that size now.

So, my next question is re tyre choices..............is the 145 Falken a better tyre than the 165 Falken, which seems to fail miserably in the popularity poles?!

Oops!....just realised the 145 Falken is an 80 profile....does anyone use it?

Its round, black, holds air - what else do you need???

My experience is with 165s. Falkens are a good tyre just weighted to an "endurance" rather then performance tyre. They do what they're supposed to do. What more do you want?

Cheers, Ian

..the replica D1,s look very nice on yr car, the only thing I don't like are the cheap thicker centre caps as opposed to the slimmer metal original ones... I use ao32 r advans 165 70 10,s on orig D1,s ...they do look beefy but I like the menacing squat look !!!.yes there is a slight protrusion but its never ever been an m o t issue... ??!!..foxy52
