Vortz Airbox

Post by bwi457 »

Hi everyone I'm currently restoring my 68 Mk 2 which has been seriously modified over the last number of years. As a finishing touch I would love to find a Vortz airbox for it but so far I've had no success. I did receive a recent PM from one of the forum members offering one for sale and would be fantastic if that person could get back to me. If anyone knows where I could pick up one or knows if Nick Vortz is still making these.

Any info would be great

Same old same old, desirability vs availability.

Nick Vortz took a lot of flack for holding back on production of his rose petals to keep them exclusive. He appreciated his customers had saved hard and wanted something special and relatively rare for there cars when they ordered from him, he wasn’t impressed by a cheque book world where you could have anything and everything just because you could afford it, so never went for the big earner and flooded the market because he was an enthusiast as well, so gave everybody a chance to own a Rembrandt if they were ‘genuine’ enthusiasts and prepared to enter the contract of, ’your accepted to go on the list and no, nobody jumps the queue’. Good on him.

12g940 that's a good point . I have a genuine set of speedwell wheels , but what are they worth now ? That's why I'm glad mini spares didn't make a exact copy of the rose petals by nick vortz . I feel the more some items are copied it takes there value away . No longer will you have something exclusive or rare on our cars . Lets face it we all like a bit of wow factor on our beloved minis , a item that not a lot of people have . There's plenty of people who would love a vortz air box me included , but if we got up a possy to get nick to re manufacture , there no longer rare !

I totally agree. The items that Nick produced such as Rose Petal alloys, airboxes etc are a work of art and the fact that these items are now rarely available only adds to their appeal. I bought a set of rose petals for my car from Nick about 14 years ago and he was a pleasure to deal with. The standard of workmanship is truly awesome and only wish now I had discussed about making an airbox with him at that time. I guess i'll have to try a bit harder to make contact with Nick again. It would be great if I could source an airbox some day, my car has been in the family for almost 30 years now and i'm currently in the middle of a full rebuild on it. I want to build the car to the best possible standard I can because of the car's sentimental value and also because I'm an enthusiast hence my crusade for such rare bits.

someone on here put some 'naked' photos of a vortz box, and its a real work of art, it just doesn't look like the sort of thing that would be easy or quick to make - hence the price!
should you wish, you can contact me on rich@minispares.com

 Ha Ha not me! as someone else has already pointed out, if I made one of those it wouldn't be a Vortz air box, but a copy of one! Take Pads photo's along to a fabricator and ask him how much to make some.............I think the quoted price is reasonably.
