Rally Mini Montage - Dave Jenkins

Montage of Dave Jenkins rally Minis....

Anyone have photos of any of them in action?

Quick search found HPP365C still exists (see top right of montage picture).
Quote:
"The car we are rebuilding is the #90 Dave Jenkins / John Green 1275S HPP365C. It is white with a black roof and was (and will be again) swathed in 'I like Swipe' stickers. They also did the Scottish in 69/70 and by the end of the latter the floor was so damaged that John + seat went down through on a stage.
Dave is known for losing his navigator from the A-H 3000 on 'the 66 RAC when he decamped at TC3 declaring he would go no further as he was 'completely stark raving +%^&* mad!'

(RAC Rally 19th-25th November 1966 - Car 121 withdrew after Ian Woodruffe refused to go any further)

Rebuild maybe not finished yet?
The vehicle details for HPP 365C are:
Date of Liability 01 06 1979
Date of First Registration 01 06 1965
Year of Manufacture 1965
Cylinder Capacity (cc) 1275cc

I met the current owner of HPP when I did the Pageant Of Power in 2012, he was entered in a Sierra Cosworth. I thought it was a 970 though ?

Here's a shot of that car..

As for the rest of the cars in that painting I'll have to have a ferret about at some point. Can't quite make all the reg's out though.

Great photo thanks Pete.....my brother is in contact with Dave Jenkins as he lives nearby.....he has some great stories about his 1960's/70's Mini rallying days and still has a few interesting cars and many parts stored away but it would be nice to see some photos of his old cars in action.

From what I have heard his Mini's could have undergone many engine changes over the years so may well have been a 970 before.

I can also make out this reg number below but I will try to find a higher definition photo.
The vehicle details for 806 NPX are:
Date of Liability 01 03 1988
Date of First Registration 17 02 1964
Colour Green
Cylinder Capacity (cc) 1275cc

Forgot to mention 806 NPX is a 1071 and originally done by Hooper I have the original Hooper dash and it also had a Speedwell engine conversion but Dave turned it into a rally car there is photos in the vortz book of it doing the 1986 isle of man manx rally.I am currently restoring it back to its original Hooper, EEL 259C is a 970 ant there is some footage of it doing a rally in Italy. I think 540 TDV also did the manx rally at sometime.

Hi Brian, my brother took the original photo so he has a higher definition original copy where you can zoom in and read the numberplates clearly, details, etc.
If you PM me your email address I will get him to send you a copy either direct or via myself.
regards Martin.

The montage picture above and CRX 89B below were painted by Tony Gardiner who owns a collection of Mini's and has written a few books including 'How to Draw and Paint Cars' and 'RAC Rally Action'
"Tony always took a week of his annual leave to watch ’The RAC’, and reckons he covered more than 28,000 miles chasing rally stages around the country. Luckily for us, he always took his trusty Zenit camera and recorded hundreds of moments of RAC Rally action, each now frozen in time for posterity. These images have an energy which brings the rally back to life and reminds us how far removed modern rallying is from the much simpler pre-WRC era."

'RAC Rally Action' is a good book with some nice images in but falls apart as soon as you open it, in case anyone considers buying a copy, now you know !

I bought two copies Pete and they both fell apart. I sent them back to Veloce and I have two copies now that are altogether and have been for some years. Tom Bradley.

You can't have opened them then!
I used to live 4 miles from Veloce and I've lost count of the number of replacemenmts I collected from them, all of which fell apart.
Veloce also introduced a lot of errors into the narrative - almost certainly through editing of Tony Gardiner's original text. I gave them an exhaustive list of the corrections needed - but don't hold your breath for a re-print.
A magnificent book, capturing the spirit of the times like no other. So sad that they screwed up the binding. Never had the same problem with any other Veloce book.

Just to add to this thread with some news and requests.

The rebuild of HPP is now nearing completion - it has taken years not least because of the state of the shell which I wanted to salvage. I'm currently wiring and plumbing.....

I did speak to Dave briefly when I first had the car but would be interested in doing so again if anyone has up to date contact details. I also spoke with John Green who gave me a huge pile of Foster & Skeff pictures of the car in the events he navigated with Dave.

The painting shows the car in 1970 guise with the cutout grille and two lights.

Pete is right we crossed paths at CPOP - twice in fact - in 2013 I was back there with a motorbike as it was 2011 with the Sapphire.

Best wishes

Yes he is still about and still has some interesting cars and stories to tell from the old days of rallying.

I have it on good authority that he has lots of interesting BMC stuff that would make a good episode for the 'American Pickers' tv series!
