can anyone recommend the best tyres for a standard rim ie 3.5 r10
I have a mini 1000 auto (ok I know not hi performance ) and I bought some Dunlop clone tyres (the old Dunlop tread pattern but now made by someone else)
the are new but just don't seem to have that much grip esp in the wet
I have spent a lot of money rebuilding the car so could do with a little more confidence with it
I don't really want to go to 165s as its had std wheels all its life and it seems a shame to spoil it now
I went though two sets of 145 Kuhmo tires before they changed the design. I ran them on 5 inch Dunlop wheels. I drive around 8000 miles a year in all weather conditions. When they were no longer an option I went to 4.5 inch wheels with 165 Falkins. Everyone seems to have a problem with these in the wet. I'd like to try a set of the 145 Falkins to see what I think. Just happened to buy 16 12 inch Rover rims with tries. I'll wear them out then look for something else. When it comes to the look I'm after the 4.5 Minilife S offset rim with 165 Falkins do something for me. I had a set of Mini lite 5s with 165s and they stuck out to far for my unflared 85 1000E with S disc and rear drums. Steve (CTR)
There aren't really any good "performance orientated" 145 tyres anymore. They are all absolute budget, bargain basement stuff, with the exception of the Dunlop aquajets available from the likes of Vintage tyre
I know that std 145s wont be as good as this , but they should be better than they are
I am going to replace rear shocks as well as its the only thing that's still left from the original car ... not quite but it feels like I replaced about 75 % of it at least!!
My preference would be for 145's over 165's if you're using the car in all weather conditions. 165's are great in the dry, but can be a real liability in very wet conditions.
I used to run 165x10s on a daily driver using the 4.5 inch std 'S' steel rims, but I found that they was really prone to aquaplaning. This was normally when travelling at over 60mph on a wet motorway or dual carriageway. Not a pleasant feeling when it all goes very light at the front end...
Changed to 145x10s on the same 4.5 'S' rims, got rid of the aquaplaning, and to be honest did not find that much difference in grip in the dry.
I have had a couple of heart stopping moments , I don't what scared me more , the thought of crashing or having to repair it all again,
seriously its fine in the dry but in the wet I had little confidence with it,
two things I will do to give it a bit more feel, replace the bus steering wheel (thank you british Leyland..) and as I said replace the shocks
I have some old tyres approx. 12years ago they have been stored in the shed and I tried them they seemed better I forget what make I will find out, but old tyres are not without their own issues!
tyres are a big investment esp if they turn out no good !
I have been through 3 sets of these on the wife's clubby estate (on 4.5 Avon Safety rims) and have found them to be pretty good all rounders. Wet grip isn't quite as good as the Falkens but plenty good enough for everyday use, I even managed to get around in the snow on them. They last quite well too, at least when she's using the car. For some reason they don't last as well when I drive it, must be the roads I use or something?

Oh yes, nothing to do with driving provocatively then?
Thank you for the review, looks like i'll probably be investing in some
