MSA Rally Mini, Help with upper/Lower arms

Post by DaveFord »

I'm building MK1 1960 mini for Targa Newfoundland and some Historic rallying over here in America.
The shell has been all seam welded and then re-seam sealed to hide the welds  and has a 1330 A+ with single weber. FIA cage. lexan windows in the back.
The rules are pretty wide open for Historic rally cars over here and to me it is not real Historic rallying in the historic class in rally America - since they use current technology for trip meter, lights, suspension, etc...
I'm trying to build my car as close to your MSA regulations as I can. Can you tell me, with my build so far, is there a class that my car would fit into over there? Or have I gone too far? I don't quite understand the appendix rules. Would this be a category 3 Mini?
I am about to buy the upper & lower arms; what arms do you guys recommend? If this mini was in England could I run this car with adjustable arms on it?
For the rules here in the US I can pretty much do what I want - but I want to be able to say that my car is a true historic rally car that I can run in the UK.
No one in the US will want to buy this car as they won't understand what it is - so I want to be able to sell it to someone oversees that could actually use it for what it is built for (not that I have any immediate plans on selling it!)
Thanks,
Dave

this might be of help, it lists a lot of what is allowed.

straight away I see your on an a+ engine..

I'm sure those who actually compete will wade in with more technical help.

Caution ;) may contain 8 Ports, Xe's and VTec's, I don't do standard!

Youre probably better heading towards the Cat 2/3 - But your engine is a NO NO - its A+ and to big a capacity, They dont like rose joints on anything or adjustable bottom arms or rear camber brackets - you can have adjustable tie rods though (not rose jointed)

Brakes wise - Cooper S brakes and thats it

Basically they like period modifications - no new fangled stuff

FIA cage is OK but it cant be a super douper multipoint jobbie with a trillion attachments to the shell- MAKE SURE the reinforcements for the cage feet meet the latest FIA requirements

Have a look at the link Rich sent you

Vehicles - Austin - MINI - Cat 1/2/or 3 and have a read , its pretty simples

Thanks for the info guys.
I did read the rules for HRCT but i think im better off doing my own build over here but im still trying to use period parts. (I guess the build is more like a club car like my dad used to build over in England. We do plan on trying to run this car up pikes peak in 2015 for fun.
Here are a couple of pics of the build so far.

Hi Dave

Lots that's nice about your car but hope you will not be too offended if I say the wire mesh guards on the headlights would never be seen on a serious competition car in UK. As far as your original question you would not be able to fit adjustable bottom arms or tie bars on an Appendix K car, top arms also need to be standard.

Another thought Dave see one filler cap how bigs your tank. Our rally car on a weber did about 10 to the gallon on stages!

Hi Eddie,
Yes the gas cap is fake LOL I have a fuel cell in the boot. The headlamp guards are off a 911 They are the ones that have a hinge on them. my dad had them on his cars so i had to get some. I might take them off but i do kind of like the looks of them. My dad rallyed in the Borough 18 motor club years ago.
We lived in Gillingham Kent. I was just reading the NSA roll cage mounting rules for bolt ins. I have a Safety Devices cage and the mounting feet are only 2x5 and it says, Each mounting foot of the front, main, lateral, and half-lateral rollbars, and of the backstays, must include a mounting foot at least 1/8th inch thick, and a minimum of 3 inches wide and 4 inches long. My weld in pads are fine.

OOOPS...I was reading the NASA rules for over here.

Now if you remove those horrible arches and fit Rosepetals, you'd have the nicest Mini in America :-D

id definatly move the 2 lower spot lamps - or you will loose them for sure, and a nice set of lexan windows from that company in the UK - plastics 4 performance or something there called to finish it off

As far as i'm aware there is a concession next year in UK BHRC to use A+ parts......incidentally lets not get too confused over App K as for rallyin in BHRC terms 'proof of use in period' carries some weight aswell...

Yes that's so but no way any A+ bits were used pre Jan 66!

Eddie, not quite sure you've understood me there 'concession to use', where in what I wrote did I put 'they were used pre 66'???...cut off date for category 1 rallying is pre Jan 1st 1968 !!

Hence why I said in rallying lets not get too confused, the rules are massively different to App K racing...

Do you know if this will be confirmed as I'm building up a Historic Rally car at the moment and I'm contemplating the best route for the engine right now. I have a nice A+ block on the shelf too...

use adjustable everything, get the car where you want it on the set up, and then put a weld on everything that can be adjusted, it is no longer adjustable ;) or , set the car up adjustable, measure everything , then make all the std equipment give the same dimensions and bingo, or, just do what I do, keep it simple , 1.5 neg btm arms and that's it ! !!, 15 years on and it still wins events,

I am led to believe a plus blocks have been ok for 12 months,
