Are my log book details correct

Post by petrolhead »

I have a 1962 Morris Mini Traveller (Woody)

However on the log book is says the following:

Make: Morris
Model: Minor
Body Type: Estate

Bit concerned as it souds like a Morris Minor

The chassis number is: M/AW4/231000

This error is not unusual, I had a 1960 Mk1 Morris Mini which was described on the log book as a Morris Minor but the engine size was shown as 848cc & no questions were ever asked when getting tax or MOT. All the numbers were correct, so I didn't try to get it changed. I know of one or two similar cases, it came from confusion between Morris Minor & Morris Mini - Minor. I'm not an expert on chassis numbers, but if the one shown on the log book is correct for the car, I would say there's nothing suspicious.

The chassis number prefix is correct for a Morris Mini Minor Traveller of the age you say. The important part of the prefix is 4.
Morris Minor Travellers are prefixed M-AW (3 for 948cc or 5 for 1098cc) then D for De-Luxe, then the chassis number.

As above it's very common for these mistakes and the "mini" part to be missed. You are right a Morris Minor Estate and a Morris Mini Minor Traveller are quite different. It's very easy to correct by sending your V5c back with the changes on.

I can only echo the above comments, back in the day when all entries were made by hand it seems that it was up to the person filling the log book in to describe the vehicle in question. I have seen all sorts of weird descriptions over the years, if IO was you I wouldn't worry about it, and just consider it to be part of your cars history.

I had a Cooper S at one time that was described as "Morris, 2 axle rigid body sports" & that was it!

As said above descriptions varied in the days of hand written application forms........no computer 'drop down' menus then with a list of choices to click on.
