The first Chelsea Cruise I went to was in 1981, after visiting the Custom Car Show at Ally Pally. I remember just sitting in traffic on Battersea Bridge. I the end the local plod made all the cars park up in Battersea Park after the local residents complain about the tyre squealing and general nuisance. The last one I went to was in the early 1990's.

That yellow Capri looks well finished, and spot the forward hinged bonnet and the Lancia Beta Coupe rear light clusters.

Here's a modded in period survivor that was at MINI United in 2009.

Complete with flip front, flip body and Ford Corsair V4 and rear wheel drive.

I bet it leaks like a sieve in the rain though!

The late Mini Se7en racer Micky Bray built the famous Ford Pop - 'Pinball Wizard' back in the 1970's a regular at Custom Car and Rod shows of the era. He shared his first race Mini with my late brother Steve Bell for a couple of seasons in the late 1980's........Micky sadly died from cancer in 2006.

Some more pics of Pinball Wizard here:

Pinball Wizard in the 1970's and the Corgi version of Mickey Brays Mini 7 Racer.

"The late Mickey Bray`s Metalflake Mini 7 car was built by Mickey in the late 80`s and was campaigned every year up until the end of 2005 during which time the car did not suffer any major accident damage. A testament to Mickeys` driving. The car was simple, ultra competive and very reliable. In the highly competitive world of Mini 7 racing Mickey invariably finished in or around the top 10, winning at Brands Hatch in 1998 whilst overcoming a 10 sec start penalty. The cars last outing was the last race of 2005 at Rockingham Motor Speedway where it finished 6th."

Click the link below to see a Photo of Mickey Bray in action racing his Mini Se7en 23rd July 2005 at Silverstone, note the cars sponsor.....Metalflake a link back to his early Custom Car days.

My quite subtle for the time 'Custom' 1971 Mk3 Mini was also at Donnington, just seen partly in this photo to the right of the Hornet......6x10 Cosmic Supaslots, 165x10 Goodyear Rally Specials, Tilling smoke tinted glass, top tint windscreen, glass sunroof, W&P Nudge Bars and arches and Canadian export side marker lamps ! :D

What a great set of photos. It really shows how times and tastes have changed. Modern mini shows are a bit boring by comparison.

Here is a B&W of my 1966 Volvo 122 Sport.
Not a Min, but as you can see, did it have some of the 70ies accessorie range added.

Inside was kittet out, with built in 7 band graphic equlizer, electric windows (homemade) etc.

The rear axle had wide spacers, that were screwed ontop of the existing wheeelbolts.
The law did NOT like those ;)

anyone remember the pen, you painted the letters on the tyres with ?

I drove this every day from 1982 to 1984. Built after smashing it through a hedge with a fibreglass kit and plenty of Isopon P38. Hand painted with coach enamel from my local car accessory shop. I painted the interior white with vinyl paint from Halfrauds. Rear wheels were Wellers with Jag 205/60 15 Dunlops.

Image

Later in the '80s I got hooked on Cal Look and drove this for a few years amongst other VWs.

I must say i did like the Vw Cal look cars , only ever saw them in the mags i must say .

Those Donnington pics are fantastic .
I have seen pictures of the event in the Mini 25 years book .

I wonders what happened to some of the cars in the book pictures and pictured on this forum ?
The Duckhams oil can Mini was still around a few years ago .

Anyone remember Gordon Jones Red Mini Van ?
It was a Street Machine magazine feature car ?
5.7 V8 engine .

I saw it at a early London to Brighton Mini run in about 88/89 parked up at Brighton's Preston Park
in the days before the run finished at Madeira Drive .

It was a well finished van , unlike the V4 and V8 cars pictured in earlier posts the body was dropped over the chassis so it did not look 'jacked up ' . Still had massive rear wheels mind .

It changed colour after a few years and I did not think it looked as good . Being colour blind i can only say that i think it was mint green with flames .
