Hoping that it is a Super

Post by nunecos »

Hi all,

A few months ago I got a shell with some surprising documents. For the code apparently is a Austin Super deLuxe, however a few letters are "wrong".

The chassis number is AA2S7S2-442138 B and it was registered in 1963 (September). For me, what it appears to be wrong is the letter "B". I asked to BMIHT and the reply was:
"The chassis number prefix for a mark I Austin Mini Super Deluxe is
A-A2S7-S. If the car is a UK built vehicle then we will have the build
record and be able to produce a Heritage Certificate which will list
the details recorded by the factory when the car was built.
However, I suspect that the car you have was built outside the UK. A
UK built car will have as a suffix either A (which stands for the
Longbridge factory) or M (for the Cowley factory). I suspect your B
suffix will indicate that your Mini was built in one of the overseas
factories.
I'm afraid we do not have the records for the overseas built vehicles,
so I'm afraid we are not going to be able to help."

And what about you guys, could you give me some help??

On later cars the B suffix indicates it was built in Belgium but that didn't begin production until 1964 so it can't be from there.

The chassis number is from August-ish 1963 which ties in with the registration date.

Is there a chassis plate on the car or do you only have paperwork? The chassis number looks a bit CKD like with the extra 2.

As I said to Nuno previously, the 2 is most probably an L from LHD as the car was registered in Portugal in 63. All portuguese cars are LHD and all the prefixes end in L.
The L must have been changed to a 2 by mistake. The question is: although the prefix looks correct for a Super, is it out or in the Super range (chassis number)? What was the last Austin Super chassis number?

I think you'll find that the Super was discontinued in October 1962 - final chassis number around 307124. It was replaced by the Super De Luxe - both shared the same chassis number prefix.
