Impressive, even with both alloy tabs and pipes ends broken.

I've got a couple of those. They were an option from the start of S production but apparently VERY few cars were ever fitted with 'em. The pipes used to crack for fun.

I sold one last year without pipes and brackets, but better than that one. Didn't reach the £200, maybe I should have referenced my own blog like the guy did

Interesting - so the majority of Ss rolling around in the 1st few years of production never had an oil cooler fitted?

Yes , according to data published in the MCR mag, from production records very few did. That goes for extra tanks and wider rims aswell. I'll try and find the figures or maybe Simon W can fill us in.

That is correct.

According to the Production Records, only two 1071 S's built in May 1963 had the oil cooler option fitted until October 1963 when two more cars had it.

From November 1963 onwards they seem to have been more widely fitted but only 180 cars of over three thousand are recorded as having one fitted - according to the Production Records.

Only 80 of the 950+ 970 S's had one fitted.

4½" rims were the most popular factory option.
The power of accurate observation is commonly called cynicism by those who do not possess it.

I remember having a '64 1071 with a 3.7 final drive, laminated screen, right hand tank and 4 1/2 rims spec'd on the Heritage trace. All the others I've had have all been bog std with no options taken. Was the optional right hand tank (even for earlier cars) always the factory production item ? And when was the first factory right hand tank available ?

My tweed grey 970 was lucky enough to have been fitted with 4.5 S Rims, v. Oil cooler and twin tanks as optional extras from new.

If you fit this in your gearbox I think you will be sorry, its pretty much ready for the bin.
