Painting a Mk1

Post by Henry »

I'll be painting a Mk1 at some point here and was wondering what is the best way to paint the doors hinges and boot hinges? I'm assuming they all should be painted off the car? How were the cars painted at the factory? Secondly, seems painting the hinges would be fine until you opened the hinge and the paint you just sprayed chipped off? Thanks in advance for any advise.

I've been thinking about this too. Is it worth soaking the paper gaskets in Waxoil or something before fitting them, or is this just going to keep running down the doors in the heat of the sun.

Hi get the hinges soda blasted etch prime them not to much and then paint them 3 coats max celly or one good coat 2 pack go for finish quick flat by hand with 2000 grit sandpaper wet keep away from edges and polish with finishing compound by hand again and they won't chip providing the bushes have been done, alot of people are under the impresion paint should be thick 5 coats it'll never rust NO.... thick topcoat = big stonechips its what's underneath what counts.Never say to a painter make sure you put enough paint on and i want it like glass as if they are good they will take offence i have, worked at main dealership 15 years ago and had this so many times, the owner turns up and part of car i painted is like glass the other side is orange peel factory finish!!! well you did say you wan't it perfect best go speak to the manager about the other side hadn't you!

Whatever you do DO NOT soak hinge gaskets in waxoyl, wax or anything similar.

This makes it IMPOSSIBLE to fit the doors correctly. No matter how much you tighten the hunge screws up the door will still drop due to the lubrication between door & hinge.

Please don't ask me how I know this!
