chassis number stamp on body

Post by Will Grant »

Now i had been lead to believe that the only ID numbers 'on' the shell were the fe / floor number.

Looking at a car i have in bare metal there is the chassis number stamped on the front bulkhead, engine bay side, on the flat piece below the aperture for speedo. Thankfully matches chassis plate. Phew!

Car is Left hook, late 66. Looking at my other car, same age, same markings.

When was this introduced to production line practice?

didn't some foreign markets require the chassis number to be stamped into the actual body at a fairly early age?
please note, these are my own, individual sales, nothing whatsoever to do with my employer, minispares

And Denmark.

Will, the chassis number was stamped in the depression from the start i.e. May 59 > but it's hit and miss and by no means did every car have it stamped there early on. As for later on I have very limited knowledge.

"Now i had been lead to believe that the only ID numbers 'on' the shell were the fe / floor number..."

MkIs of early 60s vintage had a body (I think) number stamped on a small metal plate welded to the bonnet slam panel just to the drivers (RHD) side of the latch mechanism. This is recorded in the Heritage records.

Being "part"of the body it is the only number our local authorities will accept as the VIN for my UK Mk Is.

Cheers, Ian

Only Austin's had their body number there. Morris body numbers were on a self tapped plate on the bulk head to the left of the wiper motor reading BMK

Unless they were Morris's made at Longbridge , hence all early Coopers having the slam panel plate.
