Is the distance from the manifold to the Y piece critical, if I were to reduce it by a foot or extend it the same distance would it affect the engines performance.
The engine is a 1385cc, 544 cam, 10.1 compression, 45 weber.

Come again
do you mean distance from manifold face to y piece where the 2 outer pipes join together or distance from manifold face to lower y piece where the pipes finally collect
i would guess the distance from manifold face to the point where the 2 outer pipes meet is fairly critical but the length from this part to the collecter y piece wouldent be although tuning the length of the exhaust and the pipe bore size will come into play if youre doing it properly
think this is a very scientific question to answer and theres a lot of "depends on" things in there

Re: LCB
My opinion was that the actual distances really didn't matter so much - just that the longer the 1-4 cylinder y-piece indicates higher speed engine and / or wilder cam. See the 3 into 1. What matters much more is the straightness of the tubes. Bends reduce flow.

Hello Pad4,
I did'nt make that clear did I
I meant the distance from the manifold to the 'Y' collector underneath the engine where the two downpipes meet. I just wondered if that distance was critical in any way and if I moved the 'Y' collector nearer to or further from the manifold how it might affect engine performance, if at all.
Hope that makes sense.
