New tyres

Post by miniminor »

After much deliberating I decided to put my Mk1 back onto cross ply tyres for the period look. It has radials fitted made by King Tire, I've never particularly liked them although they are as new.

Step 1, get another set of steel rims because I'm keeping the radials as well. So raided the parts department (AKA Dad's Garage!)
Steel 10 inch rims are becoming scarce! so many discarded when replaced with alloys or fitted to small trailers!

Step 2, tyres off.

Step 3, Get rims blasted and powder coated Old English White. Used a company called Topcoat Powder Coating in Portadown, did a great job and quite reasonably priced.

Step 4, New Tyres, Camac 520 x 10 from Vintage Tyres

Lovely.

Correct period tyres are vital for a nice mk1.

Haven't driven it apart from putting it back into the garage as yesterday was such a crappy rainy day here, and today is just the same
Noticed the steering is incredibly light though.

I have them fitted to my Beach Car.

They feel very different to the O32s I have on my other Mini.

It is very supple with its 80plus profile, the steering is very light, but there is a fair bit of vagueness. I have not tried the lateral grip levels, but I suppose they are pretty low.

For a mk1 850 I think they are ideal.

I'm pleased to hear that, it might be a good way to lose a passenger!

So out for a drive last night, tyres are fine - in a straight line anyway - a little more "vague" around corners but on dry road, it's rarely out in the wet, and with the minimal power produced it will be fine. Quite a bit of tyre noise though. All in all verypleased and they look well.
