1962 MK1 Austin Mini - Where is the solenoid?!

Post by roker_lad »

Been scratching my head on this one!

I've got a 1962 MK1 Mini (floor button start) which wont start. Battery has recently been replaced, and I've got power to all the other electrics (headlights etc.) but the engine doesn't turn over or click when you turn the key.

Been hunting for the solenoid as I thought this was the issue, but either I've lost the plot or its hidden away somewhere?! Is the solenoid on these early MK1's with the push button on the floor? Or am I looking for something that isn't there?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Here is a picture of my engine bay if it helps:

The solenoid is still in the parts bin and not fitted.

Unscrew the button inside the cup and clear the debris from underneath which is stopping the button depressing fully.

The floor start is the solenoid ,one long battery feed from boot to starter interrupted by the floor starter .

Thanks for all the help folks.

Is it accessible just by lifting the carpet or will we have to get at it from underneath?

Also, if its died a death, are there replacement parts available?

Thanks again!

The floor start is not a solenoid, it is simply a big contact switch operated by a thumb.
