10" hubcaps

Post by 66S »

I have noted that both chrome and stainless steel hubcaps exist for 10" wheels. Is this an early/late thing or maybe alternative supply? Our very original '65 850 has chrome ones.

I have allways wondered, why there were so many partnumbers

Early Mk1 partslist from 61 lists following

2A8069 Alloy
2A8070 C/P ( I translate Chrome plated)
21A72 Chrome iron

Later Mk1 partslist from 66 lists

2A8069 Alloy
88G337 CP ( I translate Chrome plated) was 2A8070 or 21A72

But have never seen other types than Stainless steel, which I believe has the same partnumber 88G337

I have a chrome set and a stainless set of the smaller (S type) caps. The chrome set was from an early car (1963) and the other is NOS, so I have no idea of age.

In what way are S type caps smaller? You mean smaller than the caps with the half moon or rectangular holes? Or are there different sizes of small caps :?:

Abri, I meant smaller than the half moon type (and early squared type). Al was talking about 850 caps so I assumed they were the half moon type.

Sorry guys, my post is regarding the "hubcap", rather than the full wheel embellisher type.

The small early Cooper S type hubcaps were chrome on steel, when this type of hubcap was used on MK3 Minis it was converted to stainless. Inevitably there has been a lot of Mixing since.

At one time Nick Rogers had a good supply of NOS Chrome ones.

Sadly all now gone. But when I first acquired AKY188B (Nev's 1071 now) it had very heavy chrome plated hubcaps.

Ok then, so chrome (on steel) for all Mk1 and 2 Coopers. One would have to guess that UK built 850's followed suit.

You are quite correct about the chrome too, it is very heavy and a really good example of English chroming. At the other end of the scale is Chinese chrome and I have yet to see any that isn't absolute rubbish.

an ex longbridge employee, who i regard very highly for his knowledge, says mk1 and 2 cars...chrome and stainless were used

the caps were made by 2 different suppliers and both types were used concurrently

ive heard this from sombody else who worked at cowley line too

seems either type is correct on an "s" rim

seems morris seemed to favour the stainless cap over chrome

it seems not many morris got chrome plated caps,,not many at all

so he remembers.......
for my sins,i own a 1957 wolsleley 1500
