cars of our past - snow content
was in the pub last night with wil and mark f, reminiscing about times past 'the good old days'
talking about cars & snow (topical or what!)
heres a car from my past - this was my mothers everyday car in about 1984 - i can remember it been fast, making a fantastic sound and been blooming cold in the snow!
its a 1934 Bentley, with a 'le-mans' type body on it, the doors where simple bits of black vinyl press studded across the frames. could you imagine the cries of 'think of the children' if someone was using this to carry their kids around nowadays!!! it didnt have any side screens or a heater, what you see is what you got. my brothers cot would fit into the boot behind the rear seats
it was never garaged, would be left on the street and was used every day - we even went to aberdean in it (8 plus hours!)
ignore the 1964 'b reg, yet another example of the communist attitude of the dvla in those days towards old cars!
we all loved this old warrior, unfortunately in a fit of madness my dad px'd this against another classic car in the mid 1990's, my mother didnt speak to him for weeks!!!
of all the cars out family have had, this is the one that got away
i think its where my love of scruffy old classics came from

That was a sad loss Guru, what a fantastic car that is, if you had it now it would'nt be left out in the snow. It would be nice to see to now.
Is there not some sort of Bentley register where you could find out if its still alive.

pete, it still exists somewhere, in europe i think, it was restored and had a proper, period body built.
we have others, but like you say, you couldnt leave them out on the street or risk using them in the snow nowadays
the same way cooper s's are going as well!

Amazing! Would be worth a pretty penny nowadays!
I cant imagine any of the old boys who bring their Bentleys and Rollers into work driving them through the snow to get here! hahaa! I'd like to own one and use it in the snow! it would be tones of fun!!
My dad said he used to have to put stones in the front of his imp to get it to steer... I had to put a top stone in the boot of my midget the other day... I couldnt get off the drive!

Re: cars of our past - snow content
this is another car that my dad got my mother, she ran it in the early 1990s for a couple of years
it had OMGSNOCHAOS handeling as it had too much power and not enough grip, i can remember a few sideways moments and spins in it - us kids loved it, even if it was a seriously uncool car to be picked up from school in!
like the bentley it was fast, and sounded great.
it had quite a bit of history as it had the engine from the monte carlo rally alvis that was works supported - it was quite well breathed on and was pretty lusty. alvis did two cars, one that was a full works drive (which still survives) and a privateer one, from which this one got all/some of the works bits that was broken up years ago
unfortunalty it blew a core plug out and my dad couldnt be bothered to take all the carbs off, it was pretty rotten as well, so was going have an epic mot fail, it was tucked away and its been slowly rotting away for the last 20 years
it was replaced with a red fiat uno......
for those of you that know these things, thats my brother in the picture, doesnt he look cute in his little onesie

I remember the late great Gerry Marshall racing one of those with some effect at Goodwood in 2004 (I think) on my one on and only visit to the Revival.

i remember that car racing, it had had a lot (read a lot!) of work done to its chassis to make it handle like it did!fricsman wrote:I remember the late great Gerry Marshall racing one of those with some effect at Goodwood in 2004 (I think) on my one on and only visit to the Revival.

There is a guy who runs a vintage restoration business in a unit just round the corner from my old house who commutes in his 3L red label bentley regularly all year round (including in the snow). In winter he wears a flat cap and a barbour jacket.

yeah, but its well borked
its a spares car now really, it was in its final years when it was running, all the ash framing that supported the rear body had vanished when it was running, so it was a bit floppy!
it has a huge slide back steel sunroof, 'never open it, the frame is rotten' said my dad......
anyway, there was once when my mother returned (having left us all sat in the car because it was raining) to find the sunroof shut, but me and my sisters piss wet through looking very quilty sat in a shower of rusty flakes.........
we never opened it again.....
