Restoration Price

Hi Folks.

I'm in the fortunate situation to be beginning a restoration of a mk2 Cooper S. As it's the original shell and in pretty good shape generally I wanted to get the body and welding done professionally.

To make it nice again it needs, inner and outer sills both sides, A-panels both sides with inner wing repairs, and a new rear valance.

I have been quoted 3700 GBP to do it. That includes VAT and panels.

Does this seem a fair price??? I know the quality of work they do is excellent, but thought this seemed a little high for the work required.
I know Mini welding and bodywork is never as expected and am realistic that more may be needed once you get stuck in.

I'd be interested to here from others what they think.

I would do the work myself but am away from the car for the next year at least and the ball needs to start rolling for it.

It depends no how much work you do yourself, is that quote specifically just for supplying and welding those panels in or is the car being stripped down first ? Is there paint involved ?

Car would be stripped before sending to them. Does not include any paint.

not cheap, but skilled workmanship isn,t cheap,you only get what you pay for, and to price a job is difficult, you can open a whole can of worms,and prices could esculate, make sure it is a quotation and not an estimate.
just wait till you come to the paintwork stage you have an overdraught

I had 2 proffessional welders to help me.
I worked together with them (preparing the panels & cutting out, after they had marked up, what they wanted cut.


I paid them 2750 pounds (in 2007) and I suppleid & paid for all the panels / doors / lids .

Echoing the above post, take it to someone who knows minis, and particularly the early cars. A Mk2 S is a valuable car, do it once, do it right, dont cut corners!

Good people,had a Mk1 and Mk2 repaired by them. All as it should be. It really helps when the folk envolved are enthusiasts instead of 'any old bodyshop'. Your experience is a whole lot better and enjoyable,as after all it's your hard-earned you're spending !! By the way I don't work there !!

Thanks for all the responses.
So it's about right area for a quote but a higher end quote. That's what I'm taking from them you all.
They are a mini specialist so know they're stuff. Going to try a couple more, but your feedback is very helpful.
If anyone can recommend a painter in north oxfordshire south warks that would be great.

3700 inc panels and vat.

At a rough guess I am assuming they are looking at charging 50-60 ish hrs plus panels and vat.

Has the estimate/quote been broken down for you, or is it just a number at the bottom of works required page.

I would always supply a detailed estimate.

Be very carefull and pick a good paintshop a bad paint job can ruin a good panel job !!

If you are getting it done to be your own car that you intend to keep and cherish it will be money very well spent. If you are building it to sell on, maybe a different story?

Couldn't agree more and that doesn't sound expensive for a proper job.

Getting the A panels right on a Mk 1 or Mk 2 can be a time consuming and is critical to getting a good door fit. I bet there are other bits and bobs they will need to do as well - especially if it has had previous repairs.

For top quality paint you could try Alscot Garage near Stratford on Avon
