Blasting costs

I just asked for a quote to get the spaceframe chassis of my clubmans racer (Lotus seven style) project blasted to take off the surface rust and old paint.......

£300 + VAT????????

eh, nope.

I think I'll use the scary wire cup brush on the grinder.

That sounds to expensive,the chap i use charged me £200 for a mini shell inc boot bonnet doorsand does the whole shell inside and out i would guess your chassis should be £100 ish
He has 5 different types of blasting compounds grit harsh,grit soft,soda,plastic beads and few different types of sand and can switch from one to other in a few seconds,blasting is best as it does remove the rust for good those wire wheels just polish the surface and rust will always come back .

Hi i am in north wales the blaster is in llandudno he is very very good and is very experienced in blasting car body shells.My shell was very clean no underseal etc but i have seen him blasting some really grotty shells.
He has a website www.gentletouchblastcleaning.com i think on his site it just has about soda and dry ice blasting but he has all different grades of sand etc,i have seen more shells ruinded and poor jobs than good so it is worth travelling to someone who is experienced

Yup, I expected about £100 - there isn't much to it, and most of the abrasive will miss the frame and be able to be used again 'as new'

He did say it would take a long time to get into all of the joints, but not really!
and a spaceframe will be a lot less susceptible to distortion than a monocoque shell, so each pass can be a bit higher pressure, and hence quicker
