Not A MK1, but all I have for now!

Post by Bamptonminis »

Been a little busy on my MK3 for a while now, in preparation for this years Mini Winter Rally, run by Mini Club Romand of Switzerland. This will be the third outing on this event for my good lady and myself,

first off in 2009 in our Paul Smith,

and again last year in my current MK3.

I had not long finished the car, prior to last years event, and the engine unit had come to me as “a good low miler 1275 A+”, although I later transpired it had been raced, but not rallied! I had given the unit a good check over, some fresh gaskets and then put it in! Second gear synchro was shot and as time went on the engine began to burn more and more oil, although oil pressure was always good.
So before heading back over to Switzerland, the engine and box needed a rebuild and the rest of the car would gain some additions. Back in November, I pulled the engine and box, and headed up to a Mates place with the box for a “refresher”. New bearings, baulk rings, lay shaft, central oil pickup, magnetic traps and a cross-pin diff assembly were installed, although the much desired straight cuts remain on the wish list for now.

A nice fresh box!

Back home, and attention turned to the block. The rings were shot, razor sharp edged, the big ends showed signs of minimal wear but the crank was perfect. So new rings, ends and mains, centre main strap, honing before a dammed good clean saw the block turn the corner from old dog, to fresh young pup. The head was also replaced with a stock but refurbished MG Metro item.
Back in the car and run up, some other goodies were fitted to the car. A set of ST pattern 12” Minilife wheels , shod with winter tyres were fitted, as 10” winter tyres are all but impossible to get nowadays (without a mortgage anyway!) and the Colway M+S type tyres that are available, just don’t work over there.

Another goody I had to fit, was the Brantz Rally meter my Wife got me for Christmas ( or maybe, got herself as she is navigating!?). Being born and bred in Abingdon and my Dad doing some time in Comps during his apprenticeship (not long mind), I have a strong lust for all things works Mini, and so mounting the Brantz was a no brainer to me. It had to be a works type dash!

So now its just endless mile after mile of running in. Total boredom! :D

Hi Frank, got to admit I'm glad I've got a Mini to play with again, but as you know I'm going to re-do this one when the cash comes up. Thats if a MK1 doesn't present itself first. Mighty good fun mind! Hows Wilf?

Hi Glen, Can't wait for the Mini Winter Rally, just love coming over to Switzerland and playing in the snow! Its always a good run for us that venture over from the UK. Whats the weather looking like? I saw it was -15 around a week ago. Has there been much snow? There was very little on the Historic Monte this year I hear.

Hi Phil!

Here, the wheater is quite cold!

It snowed quite a lot two weeks ago, so now, in the moutains, it is very snowy and,
very icey! You can have an idea on http://mini-winter-rally.blogspot.ch/

Normallly, it is going to be sunny, and cold!

I have some snow tracks if you need them. I'll have them with me.

And you're right, Colways are useless here... 12 inches Maxxis were the best for me.

Here is last saturday:

Hi Glen,

all ready now, just a good clean before the off tomorrow. I'm using Nankang Sv2 Snow tyres this time out 145 x 12"s. Got good reviews here, but we'll see how we get on over the weekend. Got chains also!

Will arrive at hotel Friday evening. You using the Moke for the rally?

See you soon!

Hi All.
Well, I have been and got back from the Winter Rally 2013 in Switzerland and what a great event it was, yet gain! Four cars made the trip over from the UK, most of which are based up in the Abingdon area (my home town!). All four cars preformed well with almost no problems at all, (a loose wire cutting the side lights down to two, oil breathers sucking oil, and a failed headlamp switch, between the four of them), and our winter tyres performed well in the snow and packed ice we encountered.

Here is some pics!

We had a fantastic event, my Wife Tracy did a stirling job on the maps, and we managed our best placing by far, getting in at 11th position. I think prior to this the best we have done is around 26th, so very pleased, although I must admit when I realised how far up the field we were, and had yet to be called out, I was hoping for a top ten placing!
The other UK crews, Dickie and Jason (Rio with stickers) came in 13th, Kenny and Helen (Met Red Van) came in at 23rd(?), and Keith and Chris (Black Jap spec Mayfair) landed at 26th, all out of a total field of 36 cars!
Brilliant, and very well organised event! Next years event is the 10th anniversary, so may well be a three day event, and so we're hoping to make a week of it and try a bit of winter sports action, either sking or snow boarding! Can't wait!! :D
