OMG- A newly built Cooper S engine and box.

Post by rolesyboy »

I finally got round to opening the inevitably expensive Cooper S engine and box 'can of worms' today after leaving it sat under my bench for the last 25 years. It came with my car and as I had a nice A plus 1380 at the time I fitted that . The S lump was a very sorry looking unit with the block painted in scrappy and flaking hammerite bronze and the gearbox in a yukky teal blue colour. I endured the usual crap of trying to get the flywheel off but when splitting the block from the box I was greeted with a glittering 'treasure chest' moment! New AE plus 30 pistons, worked EN40B crank, new cam, oil pump, followers, lightened flywheel and to put the top hat on it I have a new straight cut gear set.
Life is good! 8-) :D :) ;) :o 8-) :P :!: C'mon Beaulieu!

Ah but what a p*sser when your luck runs out...... Just had a look at the bottom of the no 4 cylinder skirt and it has a chip in it about 8mm deep. Not an expert but I reckon I'm fooked. Still I have the rest of the insides but it would have been nice to have a hassle free block too.

Thanks. I will put some pictures up when I get my camera sorted! A pal who is a bit of a race engine wizard just stuck his nose in and said it was definietly not a problem. He will debur it and it will be fine. Looking at the other cylinder they have raised sections of a similar height and the base of the piston travels past there so I guess it makes sense.

Now, the engine number plate has been removed but I have a very interesting 'L' stamped on the corner of where the engine plate should be. It is not the usual John Bull type 'L' but a very pronounced 'L'. Didn't Longmans stuff have this if they had breathed on an engine??? C'mon, somebody tell me I've got a Longman lump........ :D
