Mk1 windup window conversion

Post by Geordie »

Hi all
Im trying to find out some info on a pair of doors i have on a 66 austin countryman all steel export model. I picled it up about 4 years ago off a guy who knew little of its history. As far as i can tell all of the markings on the glass match, last date of registration in Western Australia is 1977 with the last service sticker being october 77. What im wondering are these doors a aftermarket conversion or a good home made job. there was a similar conversion kit available out of sydney but one of the guys on ausmini forum found some photos of the same kit on a export cooper s taken in 66
If any one has any ideas on these doors let me know
thanks Adrian :D

They look like a early variation of the tilling wind up conversion minus the mini quarterlight...esp with part of the broken wooden internal door cappings..if u look on mk1,s tuning companies section there are pics of the window conversion.. happy new year foxy52

The bit i think you on about being the wooden capping is the std sliding window chrome locking strip thats been resused put on its side and rivited to the.top lip of the door, has the felt strip rivited to the now glass side of the strip.

...think u may mean the conversions that radford and w/p used, ?? they were far better quality but some very cool uk minis have the tilling manufactured aftermarket mod amongsts others.. most seem to have the fixed mini quarterlight as on mine (pic attchd) but there are deffo a few with the larger wind up window without the very small fixed quartelight area...foxy52

...cant quite see from that pic if the conv has door cappings ? i dont think so but like any of these mods the door bins are capped of and not useable because of the mechanisms used.... froxy52

I believe Len (Speedwheel) owns this car, seen in the 1971 movie Villain, is that correct?

It seems to have a similar conversion, but maybe with a small triangular fixed section at the front?

The black MK2 Cooper 'S' (VLX31G) with Wickerwork in the fiim is a John Sprinzel car here:
viewtopic.php?f=5&t=2325#p16977

I had a Mk1 Mini in the 1970's with Tilling conversion windows, they had the small fixed perspex quarterlight, full width smoke grey toughened glass in the rest, and chrome window winders in the middle of the door pocket kick plates. Glass used to jam at an angle when winding, so I eventually sold the doors and reverted to sliding windows in black Shadowlite laminated glass from Charles Pugh autoglass.
