Vinyl Dye / paint.

Post by InimiaD »

Over the years i have managed to find a complete trim kit for my MK1 Woody.
Problem is, it's not all Tartan red in colour with some Grey items, mainly door panels / side panel thrown in as well.

To make a full matching set I have decided to spray the odd colour panels with a Vinyl dye or paint in the original Tartan red.
While I'm at it all the other trim will be "freshened" up as well.

Two questions I have to ask are, Has anyone done this before and are there any pitfalls and secondly, where can I find Tartan red vinyl spray / dye.?

Google has failed to me an answer regarding any suppliers so far.

Thanks in anticipation.

Not sure if Tartan Red is in their range, however, I have used VHT Brand Vinyl Paints in the past with very good success. I've found that it does penetrate in to the vinyl, so even if it's scratched, it's still the same colour. The Paints can lighten darker colours, but you'll generally need more of it.

To use it, like any other painting process, preparation is everything, so clean it all as per their instructions.

In the larger Australian cities there are mobile services who come round to your house and re-colour the vinyl in your car or your lounge suite. They will match any colour you want.

I've used similar stuff to Spider, but only on headlining and trim, and it was very successful, looked better than new.

Is tartan red a solid colour? The spanish red in the early cars is actually two colours, it has a red base, with a thin and slightly uneven layer of black over it, which darkens it and gives it a slightly mottled finish.

I think I have some Tartan door panels in one of my sheds if you are interested. Got a feeling they might be a bit sunbleached in places.

Try Bradleys Smart International in Marlesford Suffolk. They supply Newton Commercial and a lot of the Smart repairs guys. They will be able to supply the paint and colour match or may even have tartan red in stock. Nice people to deal with although I haven't ordered mine yet. Good luck. Mark
