Early Mk1 Choke Cable

Post by chichestermini »

I have looked high and low for the answer to this! (Excuse me for my stupidity in advance!) ;)

What is the early mk1 mini choke cable supposed to look like? I presume it's the 'C' (or is it 'CHOKE'?) non-locking version, i've gathered. However, what's thrown me off, is i cannot find any close up pictures of the 'original' knob - (Not that i actually know what it specifically looks like)

This is because what i have on the car currently is a bakelite one which is exactly the same size and profile as the rheostat knob, and simply has 'C' in the original typeface. BUT i have a feeling because there is a larger visible flange on the chrome where the knob sits against when it is fully in, that it is perhaps from a moggy minor? (I can find plenty of pictures of a morris minor one, surprise surprise!)

The reproduction one's i have seen, although slightly differ dependant on seller, appear to have a larger knob face than the heater rheostat knob? (And also a different side profile) Now, i just can't believe that they would have been odd? Just to clear up, my rheostat knob is definitely genuine and original.

Because my cable is past the point of no return, i really would like to purchase a genuine one NOS or used isn't really a massive deal. Another option, is there a bakelite reproduction that actually does it justice? (Who am i kidding, everything's made in crap plastic now?!)

Hope somebody here could help with some pictures perhaps? I've checked the 1959 mini register and couldn't quite see close enough to gather enough detail...

Thank you very much in advance, ;)

Speedy Cables can repair them. There is a post on here somewhere recently about this.
They did a cracking job on my C choke cable.

The early cars had a smaller head marked 'C', later Mk1s had the larger head marked 'CHOKE'. Being your car has the early rheostat heater knob then the correct cable would be marked 'C'.

I bought a new replacement for my Beach Car, but when I saw the difference in the knob and the length of the cable i decided to "fix" the old one. it looked like a dog had had a go at it.

It was worth it. Refurbished old parts are so much better and higher quality thn new stuff.

Interesting little topic. Never really thought about what the original Choke looks like. I currently have a new one that does not look right at all but when I have some money will hunt down a old one and refurb it or whatever as it looks great.

I have actually managed to get hold of one through the forum, which is great! Looks like You've got this one in the bag Tris! ;)

Typical, go hunting for one and then all the others crawl out of the woodwork!

I've had a look in my shed and found these:
First, a switch panel I removed from a car around that age about 40 years ago..... I can't swear that the choke cable is original but that is what it had and it is available. It could do with a clean and some oil but it's complete and isn't siezed up.

I also have this cable which I thought was Morris Minor but could equally be Mini? I can't remember where it came from. The knob on this one does more accurately match that on the heater rheostat. Both/either are spare and available if you have any interest as my current Mk1 is later and has a different cable marked "CHOKE"" just in case I get confused in my old age
