Lucas Mirror Identification?

Post by Flygirl »

Does anyone know what type of car this mirror came from? Our latest race car has had this mirror since at least 1972, perhaps earlier. It is quite unusual, with a "dim" feature leaver, and obviously not original Mini equipment. Any thoughts or ideas?

Hi Flygirl,

thats the "Holy Gral" of Mini mirrors 8-)

These were used by BMC Works in Abingdon,

and the 2 Coachbuilders Radford, and Wood & Pickett, who built luxury Mini,s for the rich & famues .

They were also used in Aston Martin - Rolls Royce - etc.

They cost a lot of money on "Fleabay" = http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/221142287234? ... 1423.l2649

so make sure you dont toss it in the bin ;)

The mirror is a Lucas 608 one, an aftermarket fitting that is used in a lot of cars.
The one Jens shows is NOS and for no apparant reason people go crazy for that kind of stuff.

Used they demand less money

And some people collect loads!

Hi guys,

That is very interesting - thank you!

The car was reported to have been a rally car before it came to the US (in late 65 or early 66). If so, perhaps that mirror has been on it the entire time.

In all the historical photos of rally cars I have seen thus far, that mirror seems to have been used starting in the 1967 competition year.

I posted some simelar questions, a while back on the MCR forum, and got this answer from Adrian Wildsmith

" It would appear that the Abingdon 'works' first used the Lucas dipping mirror on the 1966 Marathon de la Route winning MGB GRX 307D,
it then appears on the 1966 Munich-Vienna-Budapest Mini Cooper S HJB 656D
and then at least three of the 1966 RAC Mini Cooper S entries JMO 969D, GRX 5D and GRX 310D are fitted with this mirror,
as with all my other posts, I could be wrong " end of quote.

I read somewhere that the number of rivets in the back and what position they are in can tell you what vehical make they where originally for?
If you look at various mirrors they do vary from the mirror attachment to the dimmer knob :)
