There is some serious scum floating around in the rare mini bits game.

Buying anything from Torquay should done with the utmost of care, or buying anything which was obtained in Torquay. Sure, there are some exceptions, but I have had a face to face chat with a chap who explained that there are two born every second just in case one dies, and that people are responsible for their own "caveat emptor". ie:- anyone who is not totally cynical is fair game to be ripped off.

Should ALWAYS be the watch word when purchasing classic mini parts & accessories.

This is why I have NEVER valued a "story" over that of the parts I am buying. Sometimes I have lived to regret this & many times I have been relieved that I have stuck to my guns.

Without naming any names (as it is totally irrelevant). Anyone looking to purchase "rare & interesting" parts should look at what they are getting and ignore all the cod's wallop that they are being told by the seller.

Finally, I would appreciate it if people didn't make strange coded warnings like the one above, as for most people it does not act as any sort of warning at all & does run the risk of blackening the name of an entire area of the country.

If however people want to make specific allegations that they are prepared to back up with facts, I have no problem with this. I must however, remind all members that any views expressed are the views of that individual member & are not the view of me as administrator of the MK1 Forum.

That is cerainly a pattern I've noticed with certain sharks, the Japanese for example by their very nature have fallen pray to lots of this in the past buying lots of fake cars and parts (and conveniently they're on the other side of the globe). It's a shame to think that we all have to become cynical to avoid being shafted but it's unavoidable.

I can't see the person who wins that auction actually paying for it.
People are getting carried away at the moment, i bought a 1960 off ebay a few weeks ago for not much more only difference is came with loads of nos stuff inc doors and is very solid and complete.
I now of a few cars for sale at the minute which are sheds being advertised at silly money which were bought for a few hundred pounds and that was to much.

It is an age related number, but from a long time ago. Sometimes they were dished out because the original was "lost" when the computer registrations were introduced and cars weren't re-registered in time.
I'm not qualified to judge how original Speedwell the car is but it does look an appealing early Mini doesn't it.

I notice in the background of one photo is the skip condition black Mk1 Cooper which was doing the forum rounds a while back "for sale".

It's from a dealer near me that hoovers alot of cars up for sale on the net, of all different kinds. Still can't see much Speedwell about that car, just carbs and it's not a '59 as he's implying. He also has Mike Newall's 8 port racer.

The local repair garage had a 66 Austin Cooper with lots of period bits sat there. He resprayed it "blue and white" in local repair garage paint which was lying around. He then proceeded to "can't be bothered to rebuild the 998, so put that in the skip" and fitted an Allegro 1275, complete with comedy final drive, 8.4 disks and those 12" minilites which were stock later on. The seats got chucked out and it was fitted with some abortions out of a mini city. The whole thing was a total and utter crying shame. I wish I could remember the reg. Of course, he probably thinks it's worth as much as an ex-celebrity S.
