Questions about parts on 65 project

Post by Richspec »

I've got a mk1 shell that we're doing up as a bitsa road/rally car, you know - using the bits hogging shelf and floor space from previous car and projects, so not period correct in many  senses.
However i want it looking ok, so buying various mk1 bits to get it 'there or thereabouts'.
I'm a bit confused on several things.

The front subby is hydro converted to dry - should it have a rubber spacer between the top of the subframe and the bulkhead like my dry '63 has? I dont see them pictured in the exploded parts diagrams i've seen, and all the rubber spacers i can see are the later type.

I've read that in 64/65? the floor starter was discontinued and the cooper style starter was used - is this just a more conventional three? position switch in the dash.

oh - and also is there such a thing as cover panels for the inner sills? the shell looks odd in this area to me. The seatbelt mounting is in the rearward panel (the original inner sill??) with a large hole in this 'front' panel, also it sits on top of the edge of the companion box as it comes down the edge of the door.

to answer my own question its a metal spacer that goes between subframe and body :)

Next question though, are the early piano hinge opening rear quarter windows the same size as later mk4 ish ones, I realise the mounting holes in the shell dont line up but are they supposed to be a different size?

The wet subframes didn't have spacers fitted, only dry uns. (height of the tower)
The rear quarter windows of MK3 onwards will not fit into a MK1 / 2 shell.
Not quite sure about the inner sills, but it sounds as if a replacement inner sill has been welded over the original.

thanks, just confirming what i found this weekend then, thank god for that! I was worried that the rear window openings were just the wrong size on the shell. a slight relief :)
In regard to the sills I've found that it was 'just' a badly fitted inner sill and multiple patching in the area of the companion bins, which i removed anyway.

So for my first bit of bodywork ever I'm replacing the back half of the inner sill, the section in front of the wheelarch, the closing panel, and a section of rear quarter
And all I thought i needed to do was chop out the bins..
