Part ID please

Post by NZmember »

I took the driveshaft/CV joint out of my 1962 Cooper disc brake and found this circlip floating about free between the CV joint and the wheel bearing. I can't see it identified anywhere in the Haynes manual so I wondered if anyone could shed light on it. I am sure it is probably supposed to be there holding the wheel bearing etc. Just like someone to confirm. Cheers.

It's a spacer that was fitted for a time by the factory. It goes between the outer wheel bearing cup and the seal. There where 2 thicknesses, one ~5 mm for the Inboard side, the other was ~3 mm on the outboard. There is no need to fit it, just don't press the seal in too far. They did omit these from production.

It's item 8 in the above drawing

Looks like I am missing the oil seal it sits behind! Time for a new wheel bearing kit for each side.

Thanks for this

So is it possible to fit the taper roller bearing kits to Cooper 7" discs too?

Yes, it is, but only fit genuine Timken. The no name ones don't last.

It's possible, but won't the CV joint used have to be the Cooper S one, then the disk won't fit so you will have to go up to Cooper S disks. Then use the cooper S Calliper.

I don't know of a taper roller bearing that has the standard Mini / Cooper CV size hole.

the hole in either bearing is the same size, its the drum / cooper driveflange that 'steps down' the size to suit the smaller c.v joint.

the problem with using taper bearings in the drum / cooper set up is that if the bearing races wear onto the drive flange it wont come to bits as the tapers of the bearings will jam it all together.

I stand corrected.

It is in my defence many years since I have had a set of Cooper disks in my hand.
