Hi everyone

Post by Cables »

Been visiting this site alot recently and thought it was about time registered, i currently own mk1/2 (think its a cooper s aswell  ) that was converted (well butchered lol) into a rally car in the 80's (not by me), which i'm the process of converting into a track car. I also own an early clubman which is awaiting restoration.

Just thought I would add i'm not just calling the mk1/2 a cooper, it had the remote gearchange on the floor, twin tanks, and has a vin, just its not worth causing potential mither applying for it's ID for what i'm using it for. I'm guessing somebody could give me a rough age? It's still on hydrolastic and i think its an austin 1275 s, it has mk2 back lights but think it may have been converted
The clubman is very early one, i'm the 3rd owner from new but the previous owner only had it 12months and sandblasted it in that time, binned the interior and started modifying bits to fit a vtec (luckily nothing too serious really), i'm hopefully getting it back to decent standard.

Hello and welcome,

Sounds like 2 interesting projects, stick a few photo's on here and I'm sure someone will be able to accurately date the cooper. I would have thought that the rear light apertures, if previously converted from Mk1 to Mk2 style would be immediately obvious with the light units removed unless someone has spent considerable time and trouble to replicate the factory mounts, in an area not usually seen it seems unlikely - unless it had a full rear panel replaced? Any chassis / engine numbers available?
John Parnell's excellent book "Original Mini Cooper and Cooper S" gives details of all the variations and changes throughout the production.
The Clubman sounds interesting as well - I can see their prices rising considerably in future.

i would say its a mk2, apparantly when it was converted to a rally car, the builder was very meticulous and had a folder of what he did etc, unfortunately the previous owner cant find it, i have been told it was converted from mk1 to mk2 rear lights, but i think if it was, they replaced the whole back panel

as it sounds like you are the right guy to justify the car.

That interior will not be easy to find, what colour was it ?

I have a name and address for the previous owner if hes still about, it was originally aqua, but had been brush painted light blue aparantly, at a guess i would say it was black or at least thats whats going back in it.

Its had some questionable repairs in the past but for an unrestored 40 odd year old car its in not bad nick.
There person in the background in the pic with the cooper painted is my mate ben, who's got a 69 antelope beige clubman (one of only 3 made that year and possibly the oldest on the road)
