It is a small fortune isn't it but, if you really really want a set where are you going to find them? I haven't seen any straight sill sections for sale for a LONG time.

What I can't understand is that 'some' people would want to spend £800 on something that only anoraks notice ?!
I like an early mini like everyone else
£800 v SDL trim roll from the usual suspects

For a lot of people its a case of "getting everything perfect". and the act of getting it perfect becomes (in my opinion) more important than the sum of it's parts.

Logically, it is absolutely impossible to justify a price like that, because as you say very few people will notice its "wrong", but to the owner they "know" that their car is missing an important bit to be "perfect".

As early Mini owners become more knowledgeable & most reach an age where they have a bit of disposable income it's sort of inevitable. Always nice for a seller though :-)

Agree, and we also have to remember, its not a case of ONE guy ;)

The price only comes up, when people are bidding against eachother.

when a auction stops at 370 or 440 it means that one persons limit was met, there were still one that had a higher reserve

With reluctance to post ("Collection only please from BS20 6QA") I doubt they will bring the very high price.

I'm sure a silly price will change his mind.

The last set of 6" 8 spokes I saw went for nearly £2k.

I had a set of 5 1968 in perfect order. Got melted in a fire. :(

It will go high, but not to the max.

If overseas bidders cant place a bid, I cant see it happening :?:

Granted - the local UK guys will bid high, but its the oversea bidders that bid really high, as this stuff is MUCH harder to find outside UK .

The seller of my W&P dealer badge was well pleased, after he let me in on his "UK bidders only" auction

I'd say over £1.5k.

I remember buying 13 reverse rims for £80, a set of JAPs for £100, 5 TD 4.5 minilites £100 within 5 years.

It has gone totally and utterly silly.

I bought my 66 Morris Cooper (with wrong bits) for £1500 in 2004ish. It had been restored and had no rust. It still has no rust!

When I went to buy my second set of JAPs (£100) the guy had a 1071s which he had paid not much for. (sub £1000) which had no engine but was clearly an original racing S with all the bits, apart form the engine. He had a set of original rosepetals which cost him £50. (this was probably about 06).

What I used to like about the mini scene was that it was accessible to all sorts of people, some of whom were pretty "odd". This gave it a variety and flavour which was interesting and you could always meet someone interesting and get an odd bargain.

It's a shame as the cars have become premium in a major way and ebay and the recession has meant that every bootsale and auction sale goer has their eyes out for old mini bits. Gone are the days where I turned down a S speedo for a rusty bezel for £20, or some 7" disks for £20. It has gone well and truly mad.

The last time I had my mini on the road, I remember a chap (who is probably on here) with a works replica S (proper Mk1 shell and since gained a relevant registration) who commented "Nice to see one which gets used". Which was a while ago now (07).

I remember seeing the turnout of Cornwall Mini Club and seeing all sorts of stuff owned by all sorts of people and being in a road race (sorry) with a couple of fast Mk1s.

God knows what they are all like now, I hope that when I get the thing back on the road and bump into a club, as well as talking about 22g8796's and the merits of a 296 vs a 649, I can meet some people who are not just "investors".

The whole classic car phenomenon seems to have gone from an alternative to everyday transport to extreme premium top end gold.

It is totally mad.

yup.

Genuine '66 Austin Cooper, with black leather Hornet interior. Price in '96? £675

Cooper trim set? £100 (and I couldn't believe I paid that for a load of old seats and door panels)

All was not rosy however!

Image

Sold it in this condition for about £1000 and couldn't believe how well I'd done!
