1) Yes

2) Normally it would be bare metal, you could go with the option of zinc plating it or painting it

Here are some close up pictures of an original damper:

The bottom half looks like it's black, however it's more a very dark grey.

Hi Toby, thanks for the pictures!

It looks like the grey part is more or less what I've got, but I had no idea the bottom part had a different color. Hum... I haven't fitted the fuel tanks yet...

Another question (sorry, spending too much time in the garage): I tried to make a trial fit of an exhaust manifold as I don't have mine welded yet. Both are original S manifolds. Without the steady bar, I pushed the engine to the front of the car and started to lower the manifold turned 90º, ie, with the ports facing the radiator (also tried the other way - facing the clutch), and then started to turn it to the correct position, but I can't seem to make the lower part to pass the drive couplings/subframe. I removed the manifold studs, rotated the coupling joint, but no good. I didn't try removing the rocker cover, will try that tomorrow, although I found the rocker cover not being the problem. What is your experience on this? Do I need to remove the drive coupling to fit the manifold?

love the progress thanks for sharing the photos.

And as above. I would undo the engine mount from the subframe and move the engine forward ever so slightly... gives you the extra MM you require....

had the same problem with my countryman.. just undo the U bolt from the driveshaft.. 5 min job and the manifold will slide into place

Thanks! I removed the drive coupling and the rocker cover and it went in well. Now I just have to wait for the actual manifold to be welded. :)

I had a problem with my photobucket account and all the pictures had their names changed. All the referrences were lost and I didn't bother (sorry!) to update all the posts. You can see them on my blog: http://rsn-mk1.blogspot.com

The current state is more or less this:
