Where have all the 998 Mk1 coopers gone?

Post by tintoptom »

Afternoon

I've been trying to put a value on a 998 cooper project I have, with a view to selling it. But when I started to look around for 998's generally (both projects and tidy cars) to gauge current values / desirability, I noticed that they don't seem to be on the market right now + I can't remember went I last saw one for sale...

I guess attention has been on early cars and rare models like the super deluxe over recent years. Has the 998 slipped under the radar? Or am I just looking in the wrong places..!

As someone has already hinted at,
we know there are a lot of fake S's, built from a logbook. Many of them will have used a 998 Cooper as the base. MUCH easier to start with a Cooper than an 850, as most of the right bits are there already.
This, as well as rust, accidents and low values for many years has seen the demise of many.
I've no idea about surviving numbers but there do seem to be as many S's as Coopers now, which certainly was not the case to begin with.
