gearbox whine 22g 68

Post by 814CWE »

B gears 22g68
Whines in all four gears..sounds like a works rally car box

Slight chatter from case on idle..goes ln drpression of clutch

Had box off..idler gear bearings intact..look like later ones as there are less rollers than the 62 box i have next to it

Cant see anything obviously wrong...

Am i missing something ??

If it was the diff, it would still whine with clutch depressed.

I'd say the problem is in the idler gear bearings or the bearing on the end of the 1st motion shaft, sometimes not obvious on inspection.

Don't even think of putting it back together without changing the idler bearings, if it goes it can take the whole box with it as well as the flywheel housing and gears.

The two main diff bearings are usually ok, its the output shaft bushes that wear allowing the shaft to move sideways under load which affects the teeth meshing and makes them whine, thats as I have always understood it, on really worn ones if you turn the output shaft by hand with the diff out you can see the sideways movement and all the wear, hope this helps.

all seems good on inspection...
guess a strip down and a renew everyhing consumable is the best way forward

Hear this before on a lads gearbox in out local club. We thaught he had but straight cut drops in. It turns out that he had the box rebuilt by a local company who had put 1275 drop gears in. I'm still not sure how they did it but it made a right racket...

Sounds like the transfer gear bearings to me

the older style idler transfer gear that is the one that has an offset, that style was quite bad back in the day for premature bearing wear.

I am sure that is why the idler gear changed appearance and gained larger bearings.

We used to change these quite often when i was a lad back in the early 80's usually on early 70's mini's.

Thing was appearance was deceptive the bearings still looked good with not much wear, but they were noisy, we used to always change these bearings when we had an block split from the box, even if that was not what was getting done.
The best repairs go un-noticed

thanks for the advice
the needle rollers on idler gear look like the non a plus smaller type but have less rollers with the cut in them...
