Does anybody know AAO? ( or LAO?)

Post by miniminor »

Hi to all, first post,

Having had plenty of relatively modern minis, 70s,80s,90s stuff with windy up windows, which were all great fun, I fulfilled a long held ambition and bought a Mk1 at the start of the year. I've had a nice summer with it covering about 1000 mostly dry and mostly reliable miles, turning a lot of heads and making people smile along the way. (hoping it's the car! :P )

So there's the photos of AAO773A, a 1963 Morris mini minor super deluxe in surf blue and old english white, all pretty standard with the exception of inertia reel belts front and rear, a necessary safety addition for the little ones.

Can anybody help me piece together any of the car's history?, I know so little about it and would love to hear from anyone who may recognize it from the past, (Sadly I don't have the original bill of sale, full service history, every mot, tax disc and a little black note book with every journey recorded by a fastidious first owner like so many lucky others!!)

What I do know is that it was registered on 18th June 1963 as 14 LAO in Carlisle, it sadly lost this number due to a cherished transfer in 1994 (Where is 14 LAO now?) and became AAO773A, also a Carlisle number, it was restored in 2010/11 and bought by me from the Cumbria Mini Centre in Penrith in February 2012 showing 77000 miles.

Where has it been since new, who owned it, loved it, drove it, broke it, fixed it in it's almost 50 years?, I have no idea. I wrote to the two previous keepers on its (modern) logbook but got no response.
So if anybody knows this little Mk1 from the past I'd love to hear from you.

And yes, I know the grille should be chromed, not painted, I'm on the lookout for a really good one, I bought what was described as a good re chromed one on the 'bay a few months ago but was very disappointed with it. So if anyone has one gathering dust in the garage.....................give me a shout.

best regards,

Gav.

Hi Gavin & welcome,

What a cracking Min!

Have you contacted the DVLA through their "information from records" department for copies of all the old log books. This only costs a fiver & makes fascinating reading.

I haven't, I assume there is an official application form?
(Nor have I applied for the heritage certificate yet, but must get round to that)

Hi & welcome inhere :)

What a nice car you have there 8-) I can fully understand you want to find the history, of the former owners.

It makes a car so much more, when there is history to add.

Tried the dvla, all they told me was that the number is unavailable for re issue to the mini, I'm assuming someone with those initials has it as a personalized plate on their range Rover or Merc!

Yes coincidentally, I put the number into Autotrader vehicle search today and got this info as well, guess they'd not be interested in reuniting it to the mini!

Lovely car. yes I have the same problem with a '63 Surf Blue 1071 project I have who's original number is now on a Suzuki Swift and has been for twenty years. DVLA will not contact the number's owner on your behalf so I don't know how you would go about finding them. :?

Gav,

Lovely car by the way. My eye was caught by the reg no as I'm based in Carlisle so see AO plates around quite a bit - are you based around here too?

I understand Minimaster in Penrith has ceased trading, or was it a different place you bought the car from?

Hi Jon,

I don't know of Minimaster, I bought it from Cumbria Mini Centre in Penrith who specialize in used BMW Minis. They had both this MK1 and a nice Mk3 Elf advertised on ebay back in February. I understand it was restored by 2 local guys. The car seems to have never moved far from the Carlisle area most of its life judging by both its current and former registration numbers until I bought it. Its in Northern Ireland now.

The cumbria mini centre has nothing to do with Minimaster. John was supposed to be setting up selling bits but I've not heard anything recently.

I think i recognize the car pictured, but it might just be one thats similiar!!! Can i ask the surnames of the people contacted. IF !! its the car I'm thinking of it might have been owned by one of our club members.

Thanks for that Richspec, it is indeed the same car.
Would be delighted if you could provide contact details for the previous owners.
Drop me an email or a pm please.
