12th Austin Seven Mini built. Would be great if it wasn't a cherry red Morris!

Re: No, definitely not a ringer...........
This car was sold on eBay 2 or 3 years ago for around £4k. I contacted the then owner to check it out and it transpired that it was indeed a 1960 Morris. It was even badged as a Morris. He had owned the car for a number of years. He bought it from a number plate dealer in Hull who transferred the original number off it before selling the car to him. ( I think you can all make your own conclusions ).
Now the car has an Austin grille and badges but the Cherry Red colour remains along with its Morris interior.
H&H have been made aware. Be interesting to see if it gets withdrawn.

Am I right in thinking those are the wrong wheel trims? Both of my very early Minis had the small hub cap like the van & Cooper 'S'. I'm sure they also had the chassis number plate rivetted on, not fixed with self tappers.

I think the now quite rare 'basic' early Mini's had the small hub caps while the early 'deluxe' had the larger trims but with rectangular holes and slightly smaller outside diameter than later deluxe type. The chassis plate on some of my early Mini's were also fixed with self-tappers from factory.Lord Croker wrote:Am I right in thinking those are the wrong wheel trims? Re: No, definitely not a ringer...........
I'm not an early car expert but I make the following observations:
Roof gutter drains
Wrong master cylinders
Wrong washer bottle
Wrong radiator
Wrong door pocket kick plates
Double hole sliding glass
Roof drip rail
Sealed beam headlights
Looks like 2 hole sliding glasses
No door cables
Wrong bumpers
There will be many more !!

I thought these auction houses paid consultants to check their entries
The boot badging is particularly laughable
I did notice the careful use of the word "apparently" in their description though.
It'll be interesting to see if it makes the auction OR makes it's money!

Re: No, definitely not a ringer...........
ive known this car for years, it was (or the logbook thats attached to it was) apparently the first mini registered in edinburgh.
the seller of this car is fully aware of the history of this vehicle.
i think he paid around six grand? for it when he bought a couple of years ago.

Re: No, definitely not a ringer...........
DVLA record says it's an Austin registered on 30 August 1959, which seems late in the day for the 12th example made. At least, that's what the age-related number plate pertains to. As for the 1960 Morris itself, I wonder what happened to its identity. The auction ad says the Austin was re-shelled in the first year. It seems to have had a bit more than a re-shell this time...
The question is... why? Is it just an inept attempt to add value to quite a nice Morris?

john, i know this car from old and in its self its got quite an interesting story.
in short (and there is more to this, but its not fair on the seller of the car really), there was a guy in Hull who, for years, dabbled with bmc cars, his garden was always full of dead and dying morris minors and 1100's and what not, in his workshop he had a few better cars, including a pair of early minis, one red, one green.
20 years ago i used to go and buy bits and bobs off him, and the story about the two minis was that some old guy had owned them and really looked after the shells, the green one (i think) had grease nipples fitted to the sills and the old guy would pump grease into them to keep the rot away. i tried to buy the cars years ago (as did loads of people), but they where never for sale. at that point they where both part stripped cars with no number plates fitted - i suspect that they would have been both local Hull cars. back then there was no value in the age of the cars, they where just a pair of old minis, all be it in very good bodily condition (they where the first mk1's id ever seen that didnt need any panel work - they really where a pair of beauties)
about 10 years ago i heard that he was selling up - probably the council got onto him about the state of the garden, as all the rubbish vanished.
then, lo and behold the complete car turns up on ebay, for sale by the guy in Hull....
ive actually since met the pearson who bought the car off ebay, but he, although knowing that the car wasnt 100% right, had swallowed the story that he had been given, and i suppose why not?
i dont know what happened to the green car, its either still there, or was built up and sold.

Very interesting Rich, fills in a few gaps in our knowledge of it.john, i know this car from old and in its self its got quite an interesting story.

David's a nice guy and he's not well at the moment, but he was 100% aware of it's dubious parentage when he bought it as he asked us about it before buying it. He was quite happy as just wanted a nice usable early MK1 and didn't care what year etc it was. Fair enough and good for him, 18 months on and I think 108 selling may have created some amnesia though.
David has a beautiful 48 Low Light Moggy in the same sale, never restored (but re-painted) and immaculate. Another one Mr Ripley just missed out on years ago.
