Hillclimb and Sprint championship ?

At the moment I'm just putting the feelers out to see what interest there might be in a hillclimb and sprint championship for Minis next year. I know that DEWS already organise their own in the South but I'm thinking of a northern based series taking in venues like Harewood, Three Sisters, Ty Croes, Loton Park, Curborough etc.
As some may know I have done this before and have been thinking of reviving the idea for some time as many of us want to have a play with our cars but have little outlet to do so on the budgets and time constraints we have, plus the good social aspect to the events is appealing.
As I did in the past , and Mark F for that matter, I would cherry pick events based on max track time and popularity of venue so no thirty second squirts up resevoir access roads ! On the none competative side I think it may also be possibly work a track day into the equation.

All in the 'thinking of' stages at the moment, let me know your thoughts.....

It would be good to get a Scottish Event aswell - Kames in East Ayrshire is just over the Border, and you get a lot of track time

I'm keen but everything always seems to happen in the South or the North but never the middle bit! I suppose there aren't many hills around here.

There could feasably be events further north or south though there's no point in overlapping the DEWS venues. It's also the only way most of us will get to drive at historic places such as Aintree for instance that we used to visit regularly.

I'd be up for it as I am building a car to compete in the Longton and District Motor Club championship http://www.longton-dmc.co.uk/ as its my local motor club. It'd make it alot more worth while if there were more minis to compete against. I like the idea of the DEWS but its so far South I couldn't do it...

Miniworld/Minisport have just built a car to compete in the DEWS championship and I had a nosey at the car the other day... one thing I noticed was that the mods they had done to it would put it in a different class to a 'Road modified' car in a Midland Speed Championship or Longton one but not sure about the DEWS classes?

I think a mini championship should be more similar in the classifications in non-mini championships so that if you decide to do other events where the mini championship isn't there you can still compete in a class where you car would be competitive. One reason I am building mine like I am is so I don't end up competing against 16v full out race cars etc.

he told me it had never seen a race track or even rallied just carefully driven by its 1 elderly lady owner called Mrs M. Forster who apparently lived near Darlington in a house called Croft lodge with a long circular drive

Yes i did buy it i have since put the Dunlop alloys on, a black mota lita wheel, alloy gear knob and is about to go for a lick of paint. I use it quite a lot as i love 1300s. About 5 years ago i ran a lovely estate version how sad am i

I am really pleased to hear that it is finally getting a lick of paint!

Its well overdue.

It's one of the few cars I genuinely regret parting company with, but as I had no where to keep it, I had to.

I am really pleased that it's found its way to a good home.

As I have said before, you'll never find a straighter genuine Downton car in the world!

ha ha i rallied one of those for 3 years in the late 80s ex works one NOJ 946M as rallied by Russell Brookes no less. It wasnt a bad car really and was very stable once you built the speed up in it

We did run some of those venues last time Cliff and could easily do it again.

The whole idea to me is to have road cars not necessarily pure race cars actually driving to these events , have a day's competition and drive home again (though obviously a trailer's better if you've got one ,or somewhere to fekin keep one more's the point !)

We used to run a single class at events just for us (MCR), I seperated cars into three classes post event to work out a points tally. The standard class was just as the MSA set out, the road modified class to run to MSA regs again and then we had an 'everything else with an A series engine and five ports' class for cars that didn't fit into the first two inc race cars. This worked fine, though could include 7/8 porters and was won outright one year by a bog standard Rover Cooper. We were always very close in times and this created the fun.
The other advantage of our own Championship is that we didn't have to include the less interesting venues and we could create as many rounds as we wanted cherry picking the best ones like double lappers at Three Sisters.
There's no reason this can't work again so I'm going to get some feedback from the club and see where we go from there.
