classic car rescue. channel 5
Did anyone see this the other night? They were rescuing a e type (the burnt offering late one) I can't believe this show made it to airing! It's horrendous, the workmanship was appalling! Next week it's a 911, and there's a mini on too at some point. It paints the wrong picture for classic car restoration, and for mechanics in the trade!

Re: classic car rescue. channel 5
I watched this with horrid fascination. I couldn't believe it was real at first.
They used tons of filler, fitted a pretty ropey looking (new) interior, rummaged through a scrapyard for some second hand brake discs (or rotors as the American fellow called them) and generally made a shite job of the car.
Oh, and that was before they crashed the newly painted car into an engine that was sat on the workshop floor (cue more filler!).
I'll probably have a stroke when the mini episode is aired (unless the entire series gets pulled first).

It was more a black comedy than a car show Bondo to an American customizing show and the engine showed that Bernie who was I thought spotting for him should have been on the right of the car with no mirrors. A resto to the standard of the cut and shut boys

I also see the programe. Ive been a car repairer for over 30 years now and this sort of programe does nothing but show the motor trade in a bad light. The thing that winds me up is that bernie is actually a very compenent old school mechanic . Im sure that a good programe could be built around him , hes letting himself down . Hope hes getting well paid for him loosing his reputation . The wheeler dealer programe on the mk2 jag was just as bad . They should take a leaf out of mark evans book , his restorations and work are how it should be done .

Re: classic car rescue. channel 5
The classic car version of 'Changing Rooms'.........not enough time to do the job properly so bodge it........roughly grind off the paint, skim the whole car in filler to disguise the surface damage caused.......however good of them to demonstrate to any potential buyers watching how the paint and filler falls off in sheets if you have a minor impact......might as well filled the glass sunroof hole while they were at it with some filler and wire mesh.....sadly 'dumbed down' TV at its worst with the usual recaps after every ad break for the channel hoppers and to pad out the hour.
Did not see him try his buyers magnet test on the body afterwards and did they 'repair' the piston mentioned with filler too?

I was expecting to see a proper restoration as seen a few years back in Mark Evans series, which I think was called 'A car is re-born'. I was greatly disappointed with the codge-up that was produced. I agree that it casts the classic car restoration business in a very bad light. I lost interest in the program & never did see how they stopped the engine billowing out oil smoke. (Maybe some of that 'stop smoke' additive from Wilko?)

Yeh that was funny.. The smoking was to much oil in the carbs (obviously dramatics for the channel 5 audience!) he was remarking in the dramatic of the smoking that oh my god it's the engine blown (piston) then came to the rescue the southern doosh with how clever he is to have figured it out to be the oil from the carbs and not the dreaded blown engine! Then this is the funniest bit, pretty much imediatly after this they did a very brief recap of what else was done in the engine bay which included! 'replace worn piston'
Haha.. Cant wait for the next one..

Re: classic car rescue. channel 5
I was slightly alarmed to hear that they'd "repaired a piston" Haha!
Their sums certainly didn't make any sense - rooting through that skip for secondhand brake discs was just for TV surely (and possibly the "accident" too?) because there was a big pile of new parts fitted and a new interior yet the total parts cost was just £1800 With labour added the total bill was said to be about £8,000 which ain't going to restore any E-type ........I wonder how many folk are now going to be buying old E-types and expecting garages to charge similar sums?
Yes, rubbish TV at its finest.

And I noted that the mini they were working on in the background is two tone (blue with a white roof).

Haha yeh! My boss is restoring an early series 1 at work at the moment.. it's number 512 of the production line.. The car looked "okish" to start of with but on stripping it and researching the history of it we have found that it had a restoration done in London in the 80's. You would be shocked to see what had been done or should I say not been done! Rear mountings for the axle just riverted on! Haha and some had changed the clutch without taking the engine out and just hacked the tunnel away with a blunt chizzel and with brazed tacks in three place returned it to the car! my boss paid big money for it to start of with and he's spent more than 8 grand on panels upto now! Not including a bonnet! Which is 4700 plus vat!

Re: classic car rescue. channel 5
The people who made the programme contacted the chap who does the pannelwork at the Rolls Coachbuilders I work at... he went down to london, and they told him the idea... they originally wanted it to be a 'car wars' programme where two teams battled to restore two of the same cars and to see who could make the most profit... He told then it was a rediculous idea and that it would be more interesting to restore cars to give more of an insight rather than a game show theme... they said they had a team of about 6 people and had a month to do the work, Andy basicly told them that no real work could be done in that time, they basicly had no idea, so he said that he didnt want to do it....
Seems that they didnt take his advice... I missed the programme, Ill try and catch the next one, if there is going to be one!!

The last time I saw someone using that much filler was on Bangla Bangers / London Garage. I reckon Bernie must keep the filler manufacturers in business.

Re: classic car rescue. channel 5
I only watched the start of it myself and like everyone else on here was hugely disappointed and disgusted. I might actually go and watch the whole thing through just to see how bad it becomes.
I was expecting a Mark Evans type restoration as well (actually would love to see him do a programme on restoring a Mini).

Re: classic car rescue. channel 5
I recorded this weeks offering & sat down expecting something that would make my sides ache with laughter. Unfirtunately I only managed to watch about 1/2 due to my wife constantly shouting out, OH God, what are they doing now, you don't do that like that, HOW MUCH FILLER etc.
Even Mrs F could see they were doing a sh1t job, and she has no interest in cars or restoration at all.
The program is total crap.

I did not watch all this weeks but , it is well worth checking the link and check out some of the comments! I don't think the program has been well received.
