Tom, I think your comment above should read,

These are the ones that Mini Sport CAN'T sell.

I get about 3 mails a week from them through the MK1 e-mail address asking if I want sole UK concession for them in the UK.

If anyone hasn't seen them they are more a Moke-alike than a real moke

How do these cars get a valid VIN and documents? Either from China or Mini Sport?

Mark...The China built moke isn't that different to the Portugese moke.

It looks more like a mix of Australian and Portugese.

It might not look a lot different but believe me they are. For starters they are built like battleships, the steel is about twice as thick as a standard Moke. Apart from the side panels there are no pressings, every panel is folded, rather than pressed. Until recently the floors were flat, with a lumpy tunnel down the centre, squarer than Kryten's head. The current floors seem to have stiffening swages folded into them now, but still don't have a curved tunnel. The front panels don't have a joddled step where the grille fits, they just overlapped an inner layer of battleship plate inside the outer layer.

They were copied from a late model Australian Moke (1980ish), but not in great detail. None of the side panels open, instead removable panels have been put on the top of the panniers.

I haven't seen any of the recent ones in the metal, but the build quality of the early ones was very poor. They had great big gaps under the wheel arches and lumpy birdshit welding.

I have seen two registered (reshelled original Mokes, the mechanical stuff isn't imported here). I believe one was inspected and approved by the owner's fishing buddy, and the other has been welded around the outside of the radiator surround of a genuine Moke and pop rivetted to the back of the matching compliance plate.

Having said that, they are still just as much fun as a real Moke. Its just that they aren't a real Moke.

My point exactly.
