Mk 1 Indicator ends???

Post by rolesyboy »

Morning All. Does anybody know somebody who makes the black bakelite ends for Mk 1 indicator stalks. Mine just fell off in my hands  I am sure I recall somebody talking about this on a previous thread.
If not how hard would it be to make one up?? Prefer the originals and as I have about 6 with the same problem now might be the time to fix it. Cheers

There was a guy in New Zealand who did a beautiful repair kit for these, but unfortunately I lost his contact details a while ago.

I've never had his name but I think it included an LED bulb. I think he came from Kaiapoi (near Christchurch) and was into Morrie Minors. I'll see if I can find him.

Cheers Al/Mark. I had a nosey on the Trade me sight in New Zealand and it seems the guy has sold quite a few of these so I guess its a regular gig for him. I tried to join but you have to be resident in NZ to do so so couldn't contact him. If you have any joy let me know. Cheers. Mark

I have a guy next door who is forever buggering about with small stuff for his model engines and parts for boats on a lathe. Would it be worth asking him to knock a few up? Not sure how easy it would be to get an appropriate bulb holder etc but if anybody has any pointers let me know and I will get on to it. Perhaps I could get an order on the go if anybody would like some. Cheers. Mark

I have found an e-mail address (thanks KA2S4) and sent him an e-mail. I'll let you all know when I hear from him.

I received the following reply.

I am receiving Ian’s emails while he is overseas, he will not be back in NZ until the middle of December.
Maybe we can make contact then if no other source is found.

Hard work, hahahahahaha, you're soft. No problem to make a few calls to try to help fellow Mini owners.

Same happened to the one I fitted to the Mk1-esque Mini 1000. I have rewired the indicator lights to the works dash anyways but might get a repro one to help with the Mk1 look of the switchgear.

How do you actually repair / remove the ends of the MK 1 indicator? I've got an indicator but it is missing the bulb holder and seemingly any wiring coming out of the end.
I just got a working one from Ebay but the original one is in better condition and I'd prefer to move the bulb holder over. But I don't want to end up destroying the bulb holder on the Ebay item in the process. Any hints and tips?

You just wait and they fall off.

But seriously, I don't think you're meant to be able to get them off. I haven't examined an original one closely but they are either glued or molded on to the end of the chrome lever. The lever is knurled for the last cm or so to give it some key. You might be able to work one off, but I wouldn't guarantee that it won't break.

You might be able to replace the whole lever, but from memory the shaft that it is pivoted on is riveted over, so it wouldn't be straightforward.

You can withdraw the metal bulb holder from the black plastic end piece, (is that what you meant?) just pull it out, may crack the plastic though. It should come out with the wires attached.

Don't forget to un solder the wires and feed them through gently.

Sounds like I'll end up destroying it. Best leave the complete one alone as use as is.
Thanks for the feedback
