Hi Paul.

The photo on carjam is just a photo someone has uploaded of a 1967 mini (even though it doesn't look very 1967!)

Carjam just has stock photos of cars of that year you are looking up as a guide.

Al, I like your words.. couldn't have put it better myself! :)

I'm replying to the sentiment on page 1.

My car is a slag, it has bits of a 67 works mini, a shell of a Morris Mini Deluxe and Cooper running gear, which was inserted into it.....but kept the Deluxe ID and was then uprated by me, with various old racing gear and S bits.

It's a fast old mini. The people who put it together were concerned about getting a fast car, rather than having something which appeared to be premium on paper.

I remember one chap who pulled up in his 66 works replica to "have a look" say "It's nice to see one that gets used as an every day car". That was a few years ago now.

Something like a Mk1 S is an exceedingly rare, premium British sportscar. In order to pay the full premium, it has to be right. Not a load of bits cobbled together. There are a lot of people who are pointing at Austin Sevens and Morris Mini Minors and saying "That's a proper S". For £20k, no it f#%^*g well isn't!

I enjoy driving and although I do invest, it isn't in cars (for a designed return). The mini was about being a fun car which went down windy roads very quickly. The early ones were the purest design and the tuning bits from that period were as effective and made the experience authentic. It was about taking the original car and smoking the tyres up down a windy road.....giving it hell. A great part of the mini scene was that there were the purists, the enthusiasts, the big borers, the turboers, the long cams vs the high lift cams, the short strokers vs the high compressioners. It was about taking a definitive car to it's limit.

It seems that the mini scene has become premium and even a steel wheel is now £100, it seems we are concerned that our original Cooper S is worth £25k and is how it left the factory, even though it's the block from a 1275 S, with the crank of a 1071 with a MK2 body with a Mk1 back panel, some interior off Ebay, a reg document from Jason in Torquay and bob's your uncle, a genuine works car.

Saddest of all is that when I sit on the bog and read "Tuning BL's mini" by Vizard, I realise that I am nearly alone as most people are hellbent on turning performance conversions back to trailer queens and I, contemplating port size vs camshaft am a part of a bygone era and at some point, someone will take my mini, restore it to factory spec and sell all the race bits, which will end up in someone's collection, like museum pieces, rather than being spiritedly spanked around the St Just to St Ives B road, which is where I had my most memorable road race with a german bloke in a classic 911. I wore out a set of front tyres in about 8 miles or so.

When, at some point in the future my mini becomes up for grabs, I hope it is enjoyed by a proper enthusiast, rather than worshipped and teamed up with a V5, to show it is an original cooper S.

It is easy to pass judgement on something that at face value appears to be not quite kosher, without getting the full story. The chap selling the car was well known NZ single seater driver Kenny Smith. I phoned him and enqquired about the car. He had bought it off a deceased estate. The owner had started to transfer the S parts into the Island Blue UK 850 Auto that was shown listed. What wasnt immediately obvious was that Kenny still had the original S shell. So the deal was in fact the IB 850 with some S parts, a 1275 S block and crank, the original tweed grey shell complete with original doors, bonnet and boot lid, in good straight condition complete with interior. So in some cases, all is not what it first appears, sometimes it turns out to be even better.

Hi Cam,
You are quite correct but the description was terrible and really confused. My comments were more to do with the description and the photos attached to it. I heard it was a genuine car and I have a photo of Kenny driving an S, not sure if it was this one though.

Regards
Al
