Width of Door Check Straps
Width of Door Check Straps
Hi guys,
Does anybody have an original door check-strap they could measure the width of please? I have some new Newton ones that measure as much as 1.75" (45mm) and they don't fit the end plates at all well. Newtons say theirs are correct but I have what I think is an original one and it is 1.5" (38mm).
Regards
Al

Re: Width of Door Check Straps
My pick-up has got some webbed ones. They are wider than others I've seen.

Re: Width of Door Check Straps
Took a few measurements myself today.
My 61 850 has, what look like original straps and they measured 1.5/8".
The original strap on my woody measured 1.5".
A brand new strap, probably repro and possibly Minispares measured 1.5".
There seems to be a few variations in size.

Re: Width of Door Check Straps
Thanks to all that responded. I referred Jonny at Newtons to this post and asked if they could make straps at 1.5" (40mm) and this is his reply.
Hi Alasdair,
Thanks for your mail. We only have tooling for the current straps, so I am afraid not.

It seems that they are not able to make the correct size. In earlier correspondence, they weren't keen on acknowledging theirs were too wide either. Their attitude was pretty much "we've made them that way for years, so they must be right". It is a shame that some outfits making reproduction items don't want to consider product improvement/correction suggestions.

this companys stuff was good....even the dash liners fitted

as for newton,,johnny has a "im allright jack" view on life
how many people have told him the mk1/2 doorcards need to be on thinner millboard ????

they can make the dash liners out of the stuff so why not door cards
????????????
im sure they would sell much more stuff if they juggled it round a bit
ive enquired why they dont make "blue grey vinyl"
"NO DEMAND" says johnny newton
bit strange i said,,this was fitted from late 59 up until late 1964...
spanish blue is not in demand,as few cars have this fitted...do they supply it???
course they do!!!
how much of this stuff do they sell a year??
not a lot i suspect

the mind boggles

Re: Width of Door Check Straps
I suspect that the issue with the "special" colours is that if its used on other models (moggie minor for example) and is already in production they have it, if it isn't actually currently in production then they won't entertain introducing it.
