In car camera

For the 3rd time in a row, my camera decided not to work at Brands both outings. Previously I tried it out up and down the road 5 times ok but on the race day....

It's a Contour HD one and generally they don't seem to be a problem but mine is one of the first generation ones and I'm not sure if it's a battery connection problem or what. It certainly does'nt seem to be a common problem

What's everyone using? GOPro seems popular and ok but sound quality is'nt brill. Any other thoughts without it getting into the £1000 league?

my go-pro gets a massive thumbs up, from ease of use to all the atatchments you can get - everyone has been impressed with the picture and the sound.


the newer hero2 has a port for an external micro phone should you need fancy sound

I have just bought my lad a GoPro for ue on his bike, seems pretty bulletproof but as has been said, the sound is dreadful.

I was thinking about getting a GoPro but finally decided on a Drift HD camera. Its smaller in size, more aerodynamic and has a built-in screen, a lens that rotates, a remote and the classic tripod mounting thread.

The GoPro (atleast the GoPro2) come with a more open 'skeleton' case that improves the sound quality..

I was using my nephews Hero2 unit at Brands (to test the souns as I've been a real sceptic from what I've seen on youtube) and I must say the quality is pretty good... atleast sufficiently good for me to get one..

the sound output from mine at brands was fine, it can pick sounds up from a distance, what upsets them is wind noise etc.

I use one of these, just a boggo £120ish HD thing from JVC.



To stop the wind noise problem I've tapped a bit of foam over the mic. It doesn't get rid of all the noise but it helps.

I use the Drift Innovation cameras. I have 2 non HD cameras and one HD720. I chose these - as they were the only ones to have a remote at the time I got them. I normally uses one for inside shots and one for outside. The Drift Innovation cameras can all be operated by the same remote - so I can mount as many cameras I like, and start them all at once. The lense on the camera can turn - so if you mount the camera upside down, you just turn the lense.
Generally (my opinion) these cameras don't like strong sunlight if you film inside through the windscreen. Before I used a small Canon pocket camera - and the lens is much better when dealing with strong sunlight.

When everything is on "tape" - I use Racerender (or Pinnacle Studio) for video editing. I mute the outside camera to get rid of wind noise.
Racerender is cheap and very easy to use. Pinnacle a bit more diffecult - but has more fancy features.
