I believe they are an adjustable plate type silencer.
Add or subtract pipes to 'tune' exhaust noise level.
More popular on bikes, kind of cool and interesting, but I believe discredited as a real performance item by people like Vizard etc.
Each to their own, mini's were made to personalise !!
