ST H4's just finished
Hi guys,
Thought I would share some shots of my recently finished Special Tuning H4 project. All done now and ended up with BG needles. It seems that the fuel line that connects the bowls can be either at the front or the rear, but with aircleaners, it seems better at the front.
The car has had H4's on it for a long time but they weren't strickly the correct spec, now they are.

Nonsense! I had a pair of those on my GTM in the 80s. Still got the box they came in somewhere. It's pissing down outside so can't do any work I'll nip out and see what they are in a minute.mk1 wrote:Very nice!

they are a RAM-FLOW brand, and they are rubbish. only good for keeping stones and small children from getting sucked into your precious mini engine.

I use the bonnet for that

Ram-Flos have the endearing habit of turning crumbly when they come into contact with fuel. The sponge breaks down and little abrasive crumbs get sucked straight into the carb. I'm told that there is an alternative filter that can be fitted to them that improves them and is fuel resistant.
I believe they were factory fitted to the Police pack Cooper Ss here in the late '60s - early 70's.

Nice job! I have found the BG needles too rich for street use but with a 649 on the track they are great.

Agree YES to all the comments regarding Ram flow air filters - massive restriction/foam disintegrates on contact with fuel. I chose them only because they fitted nicely(!)
BGs very rich I have found - I suppose playing around with the float levels help?

Hi Guys,
The filters are Ram-Flo's and have been on the car for years with no detrimental effects. The car was on the dyno without the filters and after refitting them, only a very minor change that required no correction. I have replaced the foam a couple of times ( I look at them as expendable items)and at service time I always wash them and work in water soluble air cleaner oil. Inside are K and N stub tubes. The BG needles seem to be working well with the air-fuel reading between 12 and 14 across the range. The facts above seem to prove a few comments above wrong I think!
Oh, too much dust in the air here in NZ to run long without aircleaners.

The recommende replacement filter is the Unifilter LNX300, it supposedly flows better and doesn't crumble (cheap too!). I have a few old ram-flos on the shelf and I'll probably go back to using them with these filters at some stage. I don't know how well they flow, but they do look good!

Interesting but I find this a bit confusing??
highly recommended for use on all but sealed roads.
So, what is the problem with sealed roads, are the foam inserts perhaps too dense and therefore, restrictive?

That comment only applies to the STR which I assume is a cover that goes over the outside of the whole thing, presumably it is restrictive so only recommended on dirt roads. The LNX300 is just a replacement for the standard ramflo insert that goes inside.

The Ram Flos were also called Lynx filters - I think Lynx did the headmods and HS4 carbs on the Police spec cars.
And on the last 100 or so Aussie built Mk2 Cooper S's - which would have been the only Cooper S's available from the factory with a modified head and twin 1 1/2's - and I think a LCB exhaust.
Just a bit of trivia!
