Re: 4 wheel drive
that would be great see more pics , one thing i see is that there seems to be a very different appearance from the ant to the moke gearboxes at the back , , i wonder if the gear design is different inside the cases ?

Re: 4 wheel drive
The two gearboxes are totally different, the Ant gearbox uses a unique casing and includes a transfer case like a true 4WD, whereas the Moke gearboxes were modified from the standard gearbox to have a third output shaft for the rear wheels. The Ant engine is tilted forward on the gearbox as well. I doubt an Ant gearbox would fit into a Mini without modifications to the subframe and toeboard.

Re: 4 wheel drive
True 4-wheel drive is a AWD vehicle. Four wheel drive works independent of each wheel, meaning you only have Four Wheel drive when all four tires contact the surface.

Some of you guys maybe interested to see a follow up on the Quadra that Jan posted the pics up of. It suffered a major failure a while ago and here is a link to the repair of the gearbox;-

Re: 4 wheel drive
Thanks for the kind comments guys, it is appriciated and it spurs me on. Maybe I need a good whipping!
Getting close - on the gearbox - now. Probably have it knocked over this weekend, only tomorrow's a little wiped out, being Mother's Day (here at least).
The guy who owns it all is doing some repairs and refurbishment to some other parts of the car, since it's already off the road, so it maybe a month or so before it turns a wheel for real again. I'll be sure to let you guys know and hopefully we'll get some stuff up on Youtube.

Re: 4 wheel drive
Interesting what some of you have posted about 4x4 minis/mokes and the ADO19 Ant. got a bit of a 4x4 project on myself, made a touch easier by the use of a full Ant 4x4 system with 1275 atop the box. Oh, and a spare Ant box, just in case.............

Re: 4 wheel drive
Ooh that sounds very interesting. I'd be very keen to see any pictures you have of that. I'm sure spider will too when he gets back from his 8,000km Moke jaunt.

Re: 4 wheel drive
Will put some pics up of both boxes as they are different, The one is from the very first prototype Ant that they had trouble with, it was repaired at the factory and still has engineers blue inside it where they re-marked out the bearing positions!
FYI The special tuning rallycross clubman was a moke gearbox, not an Ant. All moke gearboxes are single range with an upright engine, all Ants have the engine rolled back about the crank by 25degrees, this moves the gearcluster forwards and allows room for the two range transfer gears. There are THREE crownwheels on an Ant front diff!!!!!!!
The steering rack is integeral to the gearbox, and all the front suspension mounts directly to the gearbox. There is no front subframe to speak of, there is no rear one either!
All suspension is by torsion bar, seperate longitudinal on the front, single transverse at the rear.
Four wheel drive is engaged on the rear diff via a bronze ring akin to a syncro ring, quite advanced for 1968!
What am i doing with all these parts? fitting them to a 1980 Moke shell.
Will take pics tomorrow
